Show DR. T. H. BELL SPEAKS AT SCHOOL DEDICATION During his dedicatory speech of the Duchesne Elementary School and the Duchesne High School gymnasium Feb. 17, Dr. T. H. Bell, superintendent of public instruction for Utah, plauded the Duchesne County School District for its accomplishments accom-plishments in furnishing modern school facilities for the future leaders of our country. He said, "The dedication of this new school plant and the completion of your other projects mark another milestone of progress for this school system. You have a modern school plant because your board of education and your superintendent have had high ideals and an awareness that you live in an age when you must move forward. " "The Size of the Duchesne County School District and the location of your main towns and ranches would justify your operating oper-ating three school districts, if you were to use Summit County as an example. I could name several counties where resources' are greater than yours, but school sch-ool plants and educational programs pro-grams have stood still. "I am aware of the fact that the main industry in this county is agricultural and that our farmers farm-ers and ranchers have not enjoy- CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 DR. T. H. BELL ed the great prosperity of other industries. But you have used your low tax base as an excuse to do nothing. Your voters approved ap-proved a bond issue because they had confidence in the Board and high commitment to education. "Your homes and all the property pro-perty in Duchesne County is pledged to pay your school bonds. Your homes, businesses and ranches are worth more because be-cause of this beautiful school building. The old school served its time. It was inadequate and your children deserved and received rec-eived better. Duchesne County School District is a good example of responsible local leadership supported by intelligent citizens who care for good schools. ,rYou will attract better teachers, and you will produce a better product from your schools. sch-ools. You have made a wise investment . The cost of building build-ing moves up like the cost of living. So does the cost of financing capital improvements. Your bonds sold at a much lower rate than today's bond market. In fact, you would pay at least 50 more interest today. These advantages come where we have responsible control and effective, management of our schools on the local level. " |
