Show M NO EXCITEMENT OCCASIONED. J" AST week Wednesday night, as recorded in Jl tho last issue of The Record, two Mexican j prisoners being held for penitentiary offenses H assault with a deadly weapon and attempted ar- H son, respectively, made their escape from the city B hall of this place, H Our enterprising ( ?) contemporary across the H street published the following very comprehensive H nnd brilliant account of the affair in its last cdi- H tion H "The sensation caused by the escape of the two Mexicans, as recorded by our H local contemporary, did not materialize. H r ' No excitement was occasioned and the H ' majority of the people said, 'good rid- H dance of bad rubbish " H That is all it had to say anenl the subject. A H basket ball game, a district school track practice H or a ladies' club meeting would have been decked H out with a double column heading and given u H ' couple of columns on its front page, providing tho H , interested parties would have furnished the ready- H mixed "dope," but the escape of two desperate and K. lawless Mexicans, who with others have been ter- Hfj rorizing the inhabitants of Modena, even goini: H so far as to threaten to kill "ny person who tele- V,. phoned for assistance to the Sheriff, is chuckled M t over and passed by in a six-line local, half of which B 4 is devoted to a sneer at the truthful and unimpas- M V sioncd account of the affair appearing in the last 1 issue of this paper. J&. l Well, is it any credit to the Sheriff or to a H newspaper, either, that menacing and dangerous Mk criminalsjjjpjrmitted to play horse with the E laws and ayoidwpuniBlim, entMortlrJofrenses LjjiVfewttVxgdjudnga .rppe of excitement or dis-Hpf'turbing dis-Hpf'turbing theif tranquirreposeY Perhaprj if th'eso H ' characters return to Modena emboldened by their M easy escape and kill a few respectable citizens the H indolent Observer will publish a nice obituary H notice, providing some of their friends will pre- m pare and hand it in, with the possible comment B , that it was too bad they could not have kept out M ' of the Mexicans' way. M The people of Modena are a part of Iron coun- B ty. They pay taxes and are entitled to.protection, m even if it does cost the county money occasionally M to afford it, and the majority of the people do not M approve of the turning loose of prisoners of this m character, and the dilatory means employed for Hjjf their recapture. These may be the sentiments of t; the lawless element of the county, but the better 1 class of citizens prefer to see justice meted out 1 to characters of this kind, and the dignity of the f laws maintained, even if it does cost a few dollars H to accomplish it. |
