Show AGREEMENT REACHED LUND-CEDAR ROAD Pa rowan-Cedar Combination, With Granite Surface at Cost of Near $10,000 a Mile. In the presence of Hugh L. Adams, county commissioner of Iron County, and Wiiford Day. state representative representa-tive from that county, the state road commission yesterday signed the project pro-ject statement for n post road from Cedar to Lund. This was done in the presence of B. J. Finch, district engineer engin-eer and W. M. Frickstad, senior highway engineer, for this district of the United States bureau of public roads, who promised that every assistance assist-ance would bo given in getting construction con-struction started on the project. Federal officials, who have their headquarters at Ogden. went over the plans for the road as already prepared pre-pared for submission to them and expressed ex-pressed the opinion that the project statement would be approved and the agreement, to be submitted, signed in a comparitivcly short time. The work may bo completed this year. Road securities draw four and one-provides one-provides that the bonds shall be sold ported that the bonds would bring only $90 or $91 on tho $100 if marketed mar-keted at present. To overcome this difficulty, and because the state law provides that tho bonds shall be sold at no less than par, Mr. Day and Mr. Adams offered their best efforts to form a company which would bid on the construction of the road. It was their belief that Iron County residents resi-dents to realize the need of the new road that they will be willing to un-dertako un-dertako tho work at a low figure, receiving re-ceiving from tho federal government one-half the cost in money and taking state bonds from the state in payment for the state's share of the work, trusting to be able to market these later. The county also will contribute r. share 10 to 20 per cent to the work The road will follow a new route from Cedar City to Lund, running to tho north of. tho present route. By the construction of anothor road connecting con-necting with this so as to form a "Y." Parowan will bo placed on a direct route to Lund also, while the distance from Cedar City to Lund will bo somewhat some-what shortened by the new routing of the road and the problem of obtaining proper road building materials will be simplified. Tho projected estimates approved yesterday will call for a road surfaced with gravel, disintegrated granite, or similiar substance, that may bo available locally. The new route is 33.3 miles long and the estimated cost for an eighteen foot roadway, is $331,328.02, or at the rate of $9,917.79 a mile. It is the belief of the engineers, engin-eers, however, as well as of the Iron county representatives, that the nctual contract costs will be considerably under these estimates. Representative Joseph. S. Snow and District Road Engineer C. II. Bigelow were also present at the meetings yesterday in connection with the work being done on the proposed route from St. George to Cedar City. Mr. Bigelow Bige-low presented the proposition of tunnelling tun-nelling the Middleton ridge, between St. George and Washington, by which means a "zero" grade' can Tmj 'obtained 'ob-tained between St. George and Cedar, eliminating a considerable distance of 7 per cent grade on each side of the ridge. The tunnel will be about 120 feet long, and the road will be shortened short-ened nearly half a mile, it is said. The reduction in the cost of a paved road, such as is proposed, is said to be almost of itself sufficient to bore the proposed tunnel. It wns also proposed pro-posed by Mr. Bigelow that a bridge and cut should be placed on Washington Washing-ton bench, between Washington and Cedar, thereby eliminating more heavy grades and shortening tho distance. dis-tance. Mr. Bigelow was instructed to go ahead with tho preliminary work on this road, subject to the approval later by Mr. Trickstad, who will make the trip as soon as the Washington county health authorities can bo persuaded per-suaded to lift the ban they now have against all visitors from the north.
