Show RECRUITING IS GOING ON. Great Activity Among the Irish In New York. New York. Jan. 1. The World says: Recruiting for South Africa is going on secretlv hut with creat activity among the Irish volunteers of this and other nearby cities. That several members mem-bers of the Volunteers, which is a branch of the Clan-na Gael, are already in the Boer country preparing for the reception of recruits is well understood. There has been a great demand for drill regulations of the United States army from Irish societies, and one firm in this city that publishes these regulations regu-lations has filled large orders within the last few days. A prominent member mem-ber of the Clan na Gael said yesterday: yester-day: "Never have the Irishmen in America Amer-ica had so powerful a military force behind them as has been given by the volunteer organization." "What is the estimated strength of the volunteers in America?" he was asked. "From the latest returns I should say about 22.000, most of whom are in the larger cities." Colonel Lynch, commander of the Irish volunteers, was very non-communicative when asked about the connection con-nection of the volunteers, with the Boer war. |
