Show We Believe - It has been stated and accepted for years that a newspaper has a great responsibility to the community com-munity which it represents. However, does this responsibility responsi-bility create an obligation to print all facts just because it is labeled "news"? It is the belief of this newspaper that any story which would embarrass a citizen or bring permanent harm to their reputation reputa-tion by revealing their names that such a story should be suppressed, unless it involves some action in which a felony conviction follows. Publishing names of people involved in-volved in misdemeanors establishes estab-lishes their guilt in most minds regardless of the ultimate outcome out-come of the case. Many first offender juveniles have had more of a problem overcoming over-coming the publicity than they have their own moral problems. To feel the necessity of revealing re-vealing a person's troubles to all eyes borders somewhat on the morbid. T.N. |
