SOONJ j I We Believe - It has been stated and accepted for years that a newspaper has a great responsibility to the com-munity which it represents. However, does this responsi-bility create an obligation to print all facts just because it is labeled "news"? It is the belief of this newspaper that any story which would embarrass a citizen or bring permanent harm to their reputa-tion by revealing their names that such a story should be suppressed, unless it involves some action in which a felony conviction follows. Publishing names of people in-volved in misdemeanors estab-lishes their guilt in most minds regardless of the ultimate out-come of the case. Many first offender juveniles have had more of a problem over-coming the publicity than they have their own moral problems. To feel the necessity of re-vealing a person's troubles to all eyes borders somewhat on the morbid. T.N. What Makes a Community Great? Have you ever honestly stopped to think why you like to live irr our big Southeast Community of Salt Lake City? Was it the price'of your home? Was it a place for the youngsters to play? Was it to have that garden spot and that outdoor cooking area? What ever the answers are, you are here now. You are a part of this community. Now Mr. Citizen are you taking an interest in the affairs of state? Do you patronize our merchants whose goods and services are the finest you'll find anywhere? Do you belong to Our local civic organizations who promote our community and its many projects? Are you interested in ample fire and police protection when an emergency arises? Are you a good neighbor or an old crank that puts up fences to keep people out? Does the lady of the house volunteer her services for charitable groups that aid those less fortunate than you? When the answers to the above questions are in the positive and good category, then you are helping to make a community great. You are a part of it's growth and it's atmosphere of friendliness and good will. You are not just a commutting tenant, but a living part of it's everyday life. If you can say, "Mister, I live in the best darn section of town, then you are a real booster and helping to make a Community Great. failure to support the trench and British diplomacy and troops when they moved in to prevent Soviet domination in that area brought, about the whole debacle. So in reality America must bear the onus of Russia's dominating posi-tion in the Eastern Mediterranean. No nation has blundered so in its Middle East policy as has our own. Now Russia has the Important voice in the settlement of Arab world issues. The stage is being set for more important moves to come. Any troop withdrawal in that part of the world, any weaken-ing of our influence means anti-West- ern governments throughout the Middle East areas. The Trojan Horse methods of infiltration com-.bin- ed with modern methods of war-fare,' with air-bor- ne troops, would quickly put Russia into an Arab zone of operation from which the Western powers could not dis-lodge her. What is more, the Middle East is Kruschev's pathway to Africa. Syria, Egypt and Yemen are merely stepping stones to this wanted am-bition. As is now becoming ap-parent large sections of the Dark Continent are susceDtible to Nationalist, anti-Imperia- list and anti --Colonialist propaganda. When these sections have completely slipped from our grasp the Wes-tern powers will be outflanked. Control of Africa is one of the vital factors in the balance of power between the free world and the communist world. The concen-tration of East-vs-W- est interests in the lands just south of the Sahara points up the strategic and economic potential of this area. Events unwisely handled 'could cause a major conflagration. Yes, indeedl Kruschev is after much bigger stakes than is re-presented in the Berlin issue. In the days when America was free, the rights of ownership en-titled the owner to use his prop- - Your tax money goes to support many organizations of this type. Organizations whose sole purpose is to harrass and hobble the cit-izenry. It would be far better if we doubled the salaries of mem-bers of these organizations and told them to do nothing; to get off the backs of the taxpayers. Better still, let us disband them . altogether and let their members find jobs in private industry where they can become producers instead of leeches . erty as he saw fit, as long as the use thereof did not in-fringe upon ' ' the rights of others. He could keep it for future use, or he could exploit it now,if' d He could sell it, give it away, or even destroy it if he desired. Any of these things he could do under the rights of ownership with-out getting permission from any-one. In the days when America was. free. Let us look at two examples of modern freedom in the pro-gressive America of today. Two weeks ago, after having looked for several months for ( land in Davis County on which to build a house, an individual was successful in finding a land-owner willing to sell a couple of acres. A price satisfactory to both parties was agreed upon and right-of-w- ay into the property was discussed. The prospective buyer envisioned a little rustic country lane, built and maintained by him-self, leading to his home. , The purchase was never made. Why? Because a Planning Board with no constitutional authority to even exist said a house could not be built there unless a hard-surface- d, curbed and guttered road was constructed. Thus the buyer would be forced to spend his money for something he didn't want even if he could afford it. Another example, also in Davis County. A farmer owning rather large acreage, and having owned it for many years, applied for a permit to build a house for his; married son. The planning board (a different one than the one men-tioned above" informed him that-hi- s land had recently been zoned for light industry and homes could no longer be built there, so the son's home was built elsewhere. What has happened to the land of the free and the home of the brave? Truly we have bee asleep to let our country degenerate to the point where busy-bodi- es and meddlers tell us how our lives should be run. Cont. next col. three may take its place. Of course, repeated cutting at short intervals will exhaust the tap root, and you, too. So I want to again thank the Salt Lake City Corporation for their efforts in helping me to have their exclusive kind of "pot o' gold" which makes my yard look anything but like the end of the rainbow. Merle Richie DANDELIONS IS JUST DANDY. Comes the Springl And with it the push to get out in the open. And my "open" is about the size of a 9 by 12. But ohl What can be done with it is nobody's bu-siness. That is, no one's except the Salt Lake City Corporation. They take an active interest in my garden and lawn development every year. Now take for instance their dandelions. They raise millions, yes, billions of them. Down the middle of the highways, along the parkings, in the parks they just nod their merry little yellow heads in glee and survey the countryside roundabout looking for a nice place to hole in when Mother Nature turns them loose. And when Mother Nature and the Salt Lake City Corporation work together on a proposition their lavish generosity is something you can't help but see. Because Mother Nature has produced quite a num-ber of winged fruits and seeds. These have tufts or tails of woolly or silky hairs. There's the willows . and poplars, the clematis or virgin s --bower, the milkweeds, willow herbs, dandelions, lettuces, and thistles all carried on wind by such devices. Not only do they come to visit-the- y come to stay. These juvenile dandelion deliquents hole in. Then on one of your mad days you go out and try to root them out. But when you try to dig them up it's all or nothing. If you leave any of the root at all what is left produces - adventitious (now there's the rightf word for the right place) adventitious buds and especially so when the root is .injured and they form on the upper end of the cut root and where there was one dandelion before, two or Merle Richie Watch Middle East Events taking place in the Middle East are tremendously im-portant. Much more so than the problems confront-ing the Western powers in Berlin. Many, in fact, believe the Berlin move just a cover-u- p, a diversionary tactic, while the real center of "V activity is with the Arab nations. Many, in fact, believe the Berlin move just a cover-u- p, a diversionary tactic, while the real center of activity is with the Arab nations. Completely controlling the whole of the Middle East has for many years been apart of Russia's ambition. This is not new with the Soviets. During the nineteenth cen-tury the Czars fought for a foot-hold on Mediterranean shores. It was only the combined efforts of the Turks, British, and French that prevented it. In fact. Czar Nicholas demanded that he be allowed to exercise a sole pro-tectorate over the Christians of Greek faith in the Turkish Empire which then included Palestine. He lost the Crimean War and with it the power to excerise control over the Middle East. Now the "Eastern question" is coming to a head and where the Czars failed the Soviets suc-ceed. The turning point in their favor was the failure of the ill-fat- ed Suez Canal invasion. Our Cont. next col. LEGALS To Mortgagor by Mortgagee in proceeding to foreclosure and sale.
