Show B14 Castle Valley Review, April 2009 Gus Burdis (Kostas Bourdadonakis) “Papou” 1918 - 2009 PRICE - Gus Burdis, age 90, our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, brother, and friend to everyone passed away March 25, 2009 at home of heart failure. He was cared for by his family during the illness. He was born on April 7, 1918 in Reliance, Wyoming to Stavros Bourdadonakis and Maria Polyhronakis, Greek immigrants from the island of Crete. He graduated in 1938 from Carbon High School in Price, Utah and was in the first graduating class of Carbon College in 1940. On a trip to Ferron he found a “peach”, Dorothy Pettey and they were married on March 6, 1941. He served in the Air Corp, US Army during WW II in the Pacific Theater where he was involved in air cargo supply missions where he earned several metals for outstanding service including the Air Medal. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Miner’s Post # 2379. Following his discharge he returned to Price and was co-owner of the Star bowling alley. They later moved to Dragerton, where he owned and operated the Sunny Bowl with the invaluable help of his wife and family for 21 years. He next managed the Price Elks Lodge for 12 years. He and his wife moved to Burlington, Iowa to manage the Burlington Golf and Country Club for 14 years and also the Ogden Country Club for one year. He retired and moved back to Price to be close to family and friends. Friends who knew him called him a Carbon County pioneer. All who knew him experienced his sense of humor and his generosity. He will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy, and his 4 children, Rosemary (Ray), Annette (Don), Frank (Liz) and Paul (Connie); brother Sam; cousin Sophie (Gene); grandchildren Karl, Shaundra, Shane, Todd, Dustin, PJ, Jennifer, Nora, and Andy; great-grandchildren Ashley, Kelsey, Jason, Keira, Nicholas, Alex, Gracie, Mikah, Bridger, and Jacelyn. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Paul, Frank and George Burdis; granddaughter Brooke Rae Burdis. The family would like thank Dr. Glenn Etzel, Castle View Hospital, Doug Parsons and the ICU, Price Community Nursing Services & Hospice, Robert and Bobby Etzel of Mitchell’s Mortuary for their help and compassionate service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Price Greek Orthodox Church or Active Re-Entry. Funeral service was March 28, 2009, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price. Interment in Price City Cemetery. Joyce Powell GREEN RIVER - Joyce Beth Wayman Powell age 73, passed away March 12, 2009 in Ferron, Utah. She was the third of four children born to Arnold and Amy Rozella (Jensen) Wayman on April 25, 1935 in Ferron, Utah. Joyce Married John Ralphs Powell October 16, 1959 in Ferron, Utah, their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. Joyce grew up and attended school in Ferron, graduating from South Emery High. She attended and graduated from Utah State University with a BS in education, she taught Home Economics at Green River High School for many years. Joyce was very active in the LDS Church and served as Relief Society President twice, Primary teacher, Young Woman organization, and served a Temple mission to the Monticello LDS Temple. Joyce loved gardening and grew beautiful roses, she was a talented seamstress and quilter, her hands were always busy. She is survived by her husband John; children, Christine (Keith) Ludwig of So. Jordan, Utah, Bill Powell of Monroe, Utah, Amy Powell Black of Draper, Utah, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Zella (Mike) Deto and sister-in-law Audra Wayman She is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Arnold and Lloydell Wayman. Funeral services were March 17, 2009 at the Green River LDS Chapel. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery. Services were in the care of Fausett Mortuary. Viola Gertrude Craig Moody Winder 1925-2009 ELMO, UT / SPRINGFIELD, MO – Viola (Vi) Gertrude Craig Moody Winder, age 83, passed away March 19, 2009 in Springfield, MO of complications from M.D.S. and age. Viola was the daughter of Guy T. and Ida A. Hannah Craig. She was born August 26, 1925 in Greenfield, Mo. She had four brothers and three sisters, all deceased. Viola married Harold Moody Sr., February 16, 1946, they later divorced. She married Philip Winder, August 10, 1952. He passed away in May 2005. Viola worked for Kitty Clover in Springfield, MO for 34 years. She then worked along side her beloved Phil in all that he did especially raising cattle. Viola is survived by four children: Harold (Marla) Moody of Springfield, MO, Julia Elizabeth (Price) VincentThrall of Price, UT, Rayola Jean (Gary) Miller of Quincy, IL, and Janice Lee (Elroy) Mortensen of Elmo, UT; 29 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and two deceased grandchildren. Funeral Services were March 26, 2009 at the Elmo LDS Chapel. Interment was in the Cleveland Town Cemetery. Services were in the care of Fausett Mortuary. Mary Ruggeri HELPER - Our loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend, Mary Rolando Ruggeri, age 85, passed away March 16, 2009 while surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 13, 1924 in Helper, Utah to James Perino and Maria Quilico Rolando. Married Peter James Ruggeri, January 5, 1947 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper; he died September 18, 1985. Mary was an active member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church where she spent countless hours working on the carnival. For many years, she enjoyed selling thousands of raffle tickets with her sister Teresa. In 1945 she graduated from Holy Cross School of Nursing, and later returned to Carbon County were she worked for Dr. Gorishek and the Carbon Nursing Home as a nurse. Mary loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her family and fishing at Joe’s Valley. Mary was a great mom, wonderful grandma, and loving great-grandma who will be greatly missed by all. Survived by her son, James S. Ruggeri, Sr (Jo Ann); grandsons, James S. Ruggeri Jr., (Tricia), Michael J. Ruggeri (Jennifer), Peter John Ruggeri (Amy); great-grandchildren, Jordan James, Michael, Christopher, Talynn, Rylan, Cash Kooper, and Bradi Brie; loving sister, Teresa Milovich; beloved brother, Joe (Alberta) Rolando; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; and great-grandson, Tristan John Ruggeri. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dallen and the nursing staff at Beehive Homes for all their love and care, Dr. Radley for keeping mom comfortable and out of pain, the great staff at Rocky Mountain Hospice for all their love and devotion to mom at the time of her passing. The Ruggeri family would especially like to thank Aunt Teresa and her family who was with Mary to the very end. Your kindness and devotion to our Mom will never be forgotten. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home. Jerry Merlynne Williams CASTLE DALE - Jerry M Williams, age 73 of passed away March 15, 2009 in Provo. Jerry was born April 11, 1935 to Woodrow Gilbert Kay and Marlyn Dawn Fullmer. She married Billy Lee Roy Williams in Henderson, Nevada; their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Jerry was a very caring person, who was always taking care of others before herself. She loved being with her family and enjoyed her old friendships with her friends. Jerry loved decorating her home and working in her yard. Her hobbies included quilting and all sorts of crafts. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Bill, sons; Bryan Williams of Hurricane, Utah, and Stephen Williams of Salt Lake City, Utah, son-in-law Isaac Martinez of Laverkin, Utah, daughter-in-law Tracy Williams of Tooele, Utah, and over 40 grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, daughter Rebecca Dawn Martinez, son Kevin Williams, daughter-in-laws Marci Williams and Paula Williams. Graveside services were, March 23, 2009 at the Orangeville City Cemetery. Services were in the care of Fausett Mortuary. Everett Romero PRICE-Everett Eloy Romero, age 57, passed away March 14, 2009 at Castleview Hospital in Price. He was born December 11, 1951 in Rifle, Colorado to Frank and Tina Martinez Romero. Married Darlene Franco, December 15, 1976 in Helper, Utah. Everett was a graduate of Rifle High School Class of 1969. He honorably served his country in the US Army during Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. He was an member of the Price American Legion Post # 3, V.F.W. Miners Post # 2379, and the Cottonwood Elk’s Lodge in Murray. While residing in Colorado and Utah, Everett worked in various coal mines. After his mining career, he continued working as a Nurse at Castle Country Care Center in Price. Everett shared a deep appreciation for the outdoors and he especially enjoyed fishing, golfing, and riding his motorcycle with his family and friends. He loved cooking, listening to music, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Cristal Marie Romero, wife, Darlene Romero, sons, Mark (Tammy) Franco, Gabriel (Amy) Romero, grandchildren, Justice Franco, Romio Romero, Cynthia Franco, all of Price; brothers and sisters, Frank Romero, Rifle, CO, Helen Jamison, Oregon, Arlene House, Rifle, CO, Verna Sandy, Nevada, Danny Romero, Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Leo Romero. Funeral service was March 19, 2009, at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment was in Cliffview Cemetery in Price. Nancy Ann Martinez PRICE - Our beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and dear friend ,Nancy Ann Slama Martinez, age 41, passed away March 12, 2009 at her home. She was born December 5, 1967 in Price, Utah to Albert H. and Mary Lou Davis Slama. Married Thomas P. Martinez, May 1, 2004 in Price. Nancy was a lifelong resident of Carbon County, where she was a graduate of Carbon High School in 1986 and the College of Eastern Utah in 1995. She shared a deep love for gardening and tending to her flowers and plants. Her favorite past times included collecting dolls and angels, scrapbooking, glass etch work, taking pictures of just about anything, and most of all shopping. Nancy enjoyed being outdoors and some of her favorite outings were those camping trips with family. She loved animals and her dogs brought her great joy and happiness. Nancy was always there for others and she was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Nancy is survived by her husband, Tom Martinez, daughter, Maranda (Richard) Gutierrez, granddaughter, Stevie Gutierrez, parents, Albert and Mary Lou Slama, all of Price; three brothers and one sister, Jeff (Connie) Slama, Patricia Kay (Jerry) Willburn, both of Price, Michael Ray (Wendy) Slama, West Jordan, Robert C. (Sylvia) Slama, Price; step-children, Michelle Martinez, Salt Lake City, Yvette Smith, Price, Brandon Martinez, Salt Lake City; 6 step-grandchildren, Dustin, Chanae, Christopher, Celeste, Braxton and Baylee. Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Lynn Slama, brother, Richard Slama; and grandparents, Alfred & Ella Slama, and Robert & Vandel Davis.
