Show A3 Castle Valley Review, April 2009 Slice of Life Photo by Kathy Ockey Artist Cliff Oviatt and his students work on a mural at the Musuem of San Rafael. Bringing the Dinosaur World to Life Kathy Ockey Local artist Cliff Oviatt is creating a mural in the Museum of the San Rafael depicting the terrain and foliage present when dinosaurs inhabited this area. This is the second mural he has created for the museum with the first one, “Tempsky Minor,” being completed approximately 18 months ago. The current mural will be the background for an Allosaurus skeleton that was one of the first to come out of the Dinosaur-Lloyd Quarry. He estimated it was excavated in the early 1960s.. Inside The Castle Valley Review online: Viewpoint The Lighter Side Issues Calendar Sportsmen Business Health Animal Life Family Utah Radiological Services owner, Ramal Jones, said this dinosaur skeleton is very fragile and great care was taken when setting it up and working around it. He also said that Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry is a result of the receding waters of Lake Bonneville thousands of years ago during the Jurassic period. The receding lake left pockets of water and the dinosaurs lived off the vegetation. They were so large they would sometimes get stuck in the mud and carnivorous dinosaurs would then attack the herbivorous dinosaurs. Oviatt has three of his art students help- A4 A5-A6 A7-A14 A8-A9 A15-A16 B1-B2 B3 B4-B5 B6-B7 ing to complete the mural. They are Frances Hanson, Spring Glen; LaRaine Johnson, Wellington; and Fern Oliver, Castle Dale. “The current mural is less complicated than the previous one and we are using acrylic water base paint and experimenting as we go along. If we don’t like it we can change it. We are all working together.” They are depicting the San Rafael Swell terrain during the dinosaur age with the open plains and hills in the background. The display will soon be open to the public at the museum and will be announced when completed.
