Show C3 Castle Valley Review, April 2009 ‘Outlaw Chasers’ Pay a Visit to Emery County Historical Society Casey D. Wood The Emery County Historical Society invited the “Outlaw Chasers” to speak to them on March 26 at the Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale. The evening began with musical entertainment provided by the Price family from Clawson. Following their performance, the Historical Society presented business to the members including information on their next meeting. After all of the business was presented, the “Outlaw Chasers,” Judy and Jerry Nickle and Kelly Taylor, were introduced. Jerry Nickle presented his research indicating the true identity of the outlaw The Sundance Kid. For Nickle, it all began with family history research. It was a general belief in his family that his great grandfather, William “Bill” Henry Long, was an outlaw who had ridden with Butch Cassidy, but until he began his research, little more was known. One night while on an online forum with his family, Nichols began discussing Bill Long as an outlaw. The family started to pass around pictures of Long, and of Harry Longabaugh, aliased the Sundance Kid. The similarities in the pictures were uncanny to Nickle, who immediately began researching the true identities and histories of Long and Longabaugh. Nickle spent the following months accumulating all of the histories and records he could, including the acclaimed Pinkerton Files, which he said “disproved what a lot of the authors had been saying” about Butch and Sundance. Following all of his research, Nickle created a website and posted his findings, hoping that someone could either prove or disprove his theory. “The response,” he said “was better than he had expected.” He came in contact with forensic anthropologist and forensic facial expert John McCullough from the University of Utah, who further proved his findings. By making transparencies of known pictures of Long and Longabaugh, and comparing the facial structures of each, he found that the two were all but identical. Nickle felt the next step to finding the truth was exhuming Long’s body, and performing DNA testing. He contacted the closest living relative to Long and received permission to exhume the body. The DNA testing is not yet complete, but Nickle assures that he will share the results as soon as he can. Nickle was contacted by filmmaker Michael Karr, and is currently working on a documentary about his findings. He is also writing a book about Sundance. Weddings Annalee’s Corner Cats Can Make for Great, and Strange, Pets Annalee Thayn My Uncle Boyd is a veterinarian. He always had a throw away cat or two at his office that needed a home. He told me that I was lonely and needed a cat, and that year for my birthday I got a kitten. My parents weren’t thrilled with the kitten because they couldn’t put it outside. My birthday is in December, and they just couldn’t put a kitten outdoors in cold winter weather. A cat may be given to one person, but it always chooses the owner. I was its favorite. I was a sophomore in high school when I got that cat. When I would do homework on the kitchen table, the cat would lay down the spine of my books. If not laying down the spine of my book, it would be curled around my neck, like my own fur scarf. She was also the most kind to me. One of her favorite tricks was to hide, and when someone would get within reach, her paws would lash out. She only did it to me once. The rest of my family fell prey to the cat far more often. Another characteristic of this cat is slightly gross, so for those of you with weak stomachs skip the rest of this paragraph. When I was in bed sick with a cold and runny nose the cat would sleep on my pillow and lick my dripping nose. I never needed tissues when I had a cold with that cat. That summer the cat left. Again Mom and Dad could not put it outside, so we had another indoor cat. I had a hard time warming up to the cat because the last one had only lasted a few months. I didn’t want to get attached just to have it leave or disappear. The cat was leery of us too. Uncle Boyd said that it had come from a bad situation. We never knew what exactly that meant or how old the cat was. For the first 10 years we hardly knew we had a cat except the food was going down and the littler box was being used. After the tenth year the cat must have felt that we were safe and she finally came around our legs and wanted to be petted. She didn’t have the fun tricks the first cat had, but she does have her own aristocratic personality. I would come home from school or work and see a large lump right in the middle of the bed. When I went to straighten out the lump, I felt the cat. She had burrowed under all the bedding and was hiding. My cat only likes certain yogurt flavors, peach is one of them. If you are eating a peach yogurt she will come and either sit on your lap or beside you, craning her neck, trying to lick the inside of the carton, and she will try until you let her finish it off. If you are eating lemon or blueberry you can eat your entire yogurt yourself. She also likes the water from cans of tuna fish, but not the oil. I hadn’t realized that she had preferences until the •Free In-Home Evaluation Community Nursing Services Home Health & Hospice Care Covered By Medicare Price (435) 613-8887 Castle Dale (435) 381-2044 Resource Options For Non-Medicare Boyd’s Family Pharmacy 381-5464 25 West Main Castle Dale, Utah For All Your Pharmaceutical Needs oil sat for a day or two. When she was younger and someone would take the can opener out of the drawer to open tuna fish, she would race into the kitchen. Now at 19 years, she no longer races in when we open tuna fish. She will lie on me for hours as I am reading or watching TV. She takes stairs just as slowly as I do. She is also very bony. We know that she won’t be with us forever, but she has been a good friend. I hate to think about the day when I no longer have her company. She has been a good listener.
