Show ELECTRICALEXPOSITION EXPOSITION I A Practical Illustration of the Worlds Progress FOCR CAiVXOXS 1M > BE FIRED AT ONCE One in il Francisco One in St Panlj Orie in Xew Orleans and the t Other in New York CImnncey Del De-l ew to Send a Message Around the World Some Great Achievements Achieve-ments NEW YORK May Tomorrow night Governor Morton will open the national exposition of lectrical appliances ances in the industrial arts building in this city Elaborate preparations have been made for this event and it is ex peoted that the attendance will be large and include some of the most distinguished distin-guished electricians in this country The convention is that of the National F Na-tional Electric Light association to which delegates have been sent representing repre-senting more than 10000 electric light plants in the United States whose aggregate ag-gregate capital is in excess of 750 000000 The industrial arts building has been the scene of great activity during the last ten days and nigM and an enormous force of electricians and mechanics have been at work THE PRINCIPAL FEATURE of the opening exercises will be the turning on of a current of electricity generated by the waters of the Niagara river in the great power house of the Niag Power company which current cur-rent of electricity will be transmitted over an ordinary telegraph wire of the Western Union Telegraph company The Insulation of this line is such that no considerable amount of electrical energy for power purposes can be Itransmfte but by the use of the recently re-cently indented twophase Tesla system sys-tem enough energy will be transmit ed to establish beyond luestion it is claimed the feasibility of long distance electric power transmission upon a commercial basis This line will be 462 miles in length the longest line heretofore I here-tofore established from the falls The governor will use upon this occasion oc-casion the gold key with which President 1 Presi-dent Cleveland put In motion the WHEELS OF INDUSTRY 4 at the Worlds fair Governor Morton will also at the declaration that the I exposition is open discharge four I pieces of artillery one stationed in the public square in San Francisco one In Augusta Maine one in front of the public building at St Paul and another an-other in the public park in New Ort Or-t leans This discnarge is also to be accomplished ac-complished by a current of electricity generated in Niagara and transmitted over the telegraph lines of the Postal TelegraphCable company J2 i also with the sanction of the secretary of war the government artillery service will be brought into requisition The current of electricity which is transmitted from Niagara will be used in putting in motion a model off of-f THE NIAGARA POWER PLANT recently constructed by a syndicate at a cost of upwards of 55000000 This plant consists in a tunnel 8000 feet in length entered by a wheel pit 186 feet in dept at the bottom of which are mammoth turbine vheels operating t shaft un top of which are immense electrical generators with a capacity of 5000 horse power The total weight of the turbine wheel shaft and generator is upwards of 100 tons This model which is shown with the Niagara current cur-rent is a cross section view of the tunnel tun-nel wheel pit and machinery and also I shows a section of the city of Niagara I Niag-ara Falls with the course of the river and American falls the island and Canadian I Ca-nadian frontier Surrounding this model will be a series ser-ies of telephones which will be connected con-nected with a receiver placed in Victoria Vic-toria park on the Canadian side of the Niagara river All present as they witness wit-ness the movement of the machinery by the current of Niagara can hear distinctly dis-tinctly the roar of the caitaract There will also be exhibited and operated 3 miniature section of the Erie canal showing the CABLEWAY SYSTEM of electrical canal boat propulsion recently cently adopted by the state of New York and soon to be put in operation upon the Erie canal Floating upon this miniature canal will be a fleet of model canal boats of recent design propelled by the electric motor which travels upon the canal by means of the current Another feature of unusual interest will be the closing of a circuit around the world by which a cable message will be sent by Chauncey De pew over the cables to Lisbon through the Mediterranean and the Suez canal and line Red sea to Aden thence to Ceylon and Australia returning byway by-way of Cape Good Hope the African I coast the Bradil cable the land line to I the City of Mexico thence by way of San Francisco to New York This message Dr Depew will send from a table which will be placed in a gallery of the exposition building I will bead be-ad and received by Mr Edward D Adams president of the Niagara Power company whose reply will be transmitted to and received by D De I paw who will follow with a brief address ad-dress upon the electric era |
