Show TROUBLE IS LOOKED FOR I Wine Hundred Street Car Employees Em-ployees Strike in Milwaukee waukee THE DEMANDS MADE Increased Pay and Recognition of the Union Men from Other Cities Bclnc Imported Im-ported to Fill the Places of the Strikers Extra Police and SherIff l Sher-Iff Sworn In Troops Will Be Called Out i the Developments Justify Such Action Acton MILWAUKEE WIs May 3The strike of the 900 employees of the Milwaukee Mil-waukee Electric Railway and Light company was inaugurated tonight and as each car was run into the barn j motormen and conductors left i not to j I return until the demands of the union jj for increased pay recognition of the j employees organization and several i minor concessions are granted The electric railway company had seen that a stike was to occur and t have been quietly arranging to fill the strikers places A number of men j have been brought here from other 1 cities totake the place of the strikers 1 and are quartered in the several barns The strike was determined on at midnight j J mid-night tonight at a mass meeting of the members of the union when it was t learned by the officers of the union that men of other cities were being imported j im-ported and that the company was preparing pre-paring to immediately fill the i PLACES OF THE OLD EMPLOYEES 1 Cooks arrived from Chicago tonight j and were at once taken to car barns i j where arrangements were made to feed i the new men who will sleep in the J j barns as long as they are in danger of violence Similar arrangements will be made at the power house on River 1 street Special policemen will be sworn in tomorrow some of whom will be r stationed at the barns and powerhouses power-houses and others will b placed on the cars to protect the new mem The strike which began tonight will tie up the entire electric and street > railway service of the city The several sev-eral lines are owned by the one company com-pany and every employee of the road is a member of the union I addition to the street railway employees the electric elec-tric light companies are involved and will probably strike tomorrow They number 300 men and operate the only electric lighting plant in the city Unless Un-less the company is prepared to man the power house the city will be with jut j-ut light tomorrow night except fort gas for-t 1 SERIOUS TROULE IS EXPECTED Is evidenced by the activity at police headquarters and the sheriffs office Up to midnight 100 special policemen had been sworn in and will go on duty tomorrow The sheriff will have a large force of special deputies on duty tomorrow He has also taken steps to confer with the governor on the advisability ad-visability of ordering the Fourth regiment regi-ment W N G underarms Troops will not be called out however how-ever unless the local authorities find themselves unable to protect the property prop-erty of h railway company |
