Show H We very much doubted at the time If the merely general declaration of the Illinois Republican convention in favor fa-vor of honest money would satisfy the Chicago TimesHerald which called I I not only for a declaration in favor of the single gold standard but also for an antisilver declaration We were right in entertaining our doubts as will be seen by this postconvention editorial editor-ial of that paper The convention went further than the politicians wished and not as far as the people expeoted in the coinage resolution res-olution Instead of an outandout declaration dec-laration against the free coinace of silver by the United States at a ratio I of 16 to 1 or any other ratio which would have been the exact expression of the opinion of a vast majority of the Republicans of the state the committee I com-mittee on resolutions persuaded by country members who have heard the noisy silver crickets in their districts diluted the pronouncement down to a vigorous generality in favor of honest money Still the TimesHerald comforts itself with the reflection that there can be no doubt of the meaning of the resolution and the further reflection that the Republicans of Illinois are for an honest hon-est dollar I |
