Show KICOL HOODS LOGIC NUTS FOR THE 3IAXIFESTO supPORTERS SUP-PORTERS TO CRACK I Asking People to Endorse a Statement State-ment rIley Believe to lie False Following Out the Principle of Hanging a Ulim First and Trying Him Afterwards To the Editor of The Herald I kindly ask for a little space in The Herald as I desire to say something in regard to the new manifesto and to voice the sentiment of public opinion that one hears expressed on nearly every occasion oc-casion The Mormon people voted at their general gen-eral conference and approved of this document doc-ument yet it is a well known fact that a great many of them are opposed to it This opposition arises from that part of the document wherein it states that the church authorities have no desire neither have they ever interfered in any way in regard to politics Now a great many of us do not believe this part of the manifesto mani-festo and to ask us to vote for it is entirely wrong We have been taught that God hates a hypocrite and we would simply be exhibiting ourselves as such were we to vote for something we thought I was not right Another thing it has always al-ways been the rule when anything pertaining per-taining to church matters was before the I people a negative vote has always been called for and it has always been charged by the enemies of the Mormon I church that this was only a form as no one would dare to vote against anything the church leaders placed before the people peo-ple for fear of being disfellowshipped This has been denied by us time and time again Yet strange to say to all appearances our enemies seem to have been right for once At the Provo conference the people were told to vote for or against the manifesto man-ifesto just as they pleased but were also told if they did not vote for it they did not have the spirit of the gospel at heart At Tooele last Sunday Apostle Ly man told the people that tomorrow Monday Mon-day the manifesto would be read to them and invited the people to be present pres-ent except the tenderfeethe did not care whether they were present or not l irp ike eYm pi fno interpreted this means all you who intend to vote for the manifesto be present pres-ent all you who intend to vote against It stay away According to the report in yesterdays Herald there were four men who had the courage of their convictions con-victions to vote against that document They simply made use of that Godgiven right freedom of conscience and for which so your report tells us one of them was promptly disciplined by those I in authority by having his name withdrawn with-drawn as an officer in that stake of Zion This is something after the manner man-ner of hanging the man first and giving giv-ing him a trial afterward and it is just such action as this Mr Editor that is causing so much dissatisfaction among the Mormon people today and the best way to stop this dissatisfaction and criticism criti-cism is to stop presenting this manifesto to the people and issue one naming the church officers who are prohibited from entering the political field and let it prohibit them from taking any part whatever in politics and all will be well But this way of giving the people an onion to chew when they expected an apple is what is causing all the trouble NICOL HOOD Sugar House April 281896 |
