Show THE LOSS OF MICHIGAN j As was to be expected the irlmIPh of the gold standard forces in the stat j convention of Michigan was billed with very great delight by the single standard stand-ard wing of the Democratic party and by the administration with especial joyDon Don M Dickicsons dispatch to the administration at Washington saying Ve elected twenty honest money men out 6f twentyeight In the delegation and put In the unit rule revived the sinking hopes of the gold standard I Democrats about administration headquarters I head-quarters I A special tb the GlobeDemocrat j I says The president manifested more interest in-terest in the news from the Michigan Democratic convention than he has shown in any political event for two years For the first time in that period per-iod he received dispatches at the White I I house and followed the proceedings as fast as tlte report came over the wire I As the tact of complete control by the gold standard Democrats developed the president manifested his satisfaction satisfac-tion pointedly I It is also said that sound money Democrats Dem-ocrats regard ithe result in Michigan as the turning point in the campaign for the control of the Chicago convention I On the other hand while the loss of I Michigan is deplored by silver Democrats Demo-crats it Is not regarded by any means i as endangering the control of the national I na-tional convention by silver men Senator I Sen-ator Jones of Arkansas a leader among silver Democrats is represented in this same dispatch as saying The serious question is whether patriotism pat-riotism or nelf will control I think the result in Michigan will be a warning warn-ing to our silver people not to send any man to the state or national conventions con-ventions whom they do not know to be honest I think they will be careful care-ful in Illinois Indiana Ohio Iowa and the other states A tremendous effort I is being made by the gold men in the states named but my information is that they cannot defeat us In Cook county Illinois < they are moving heaven and earth It is a mighty hot fight but our people are confident I have not received sufficient information as to the details of the Michigan convention con-vention to speak positively on the subject sub-ject My understanding is that a majority ma-jority of in the neighborhood of 200 delegates were instructed for silver and that by some sort of argument enough were drawn over to the other side to accomplish the result reported I am told that Mils was worked through inducing in-ducing a number of delegates to be represented by proxies whom they supposed sup-posed were silver men but who were not As far as the loss of the delegates dele-gates to the national convention is concerned con-cerned it is nat a mnhtpr nf rrrpnt rnn sequence though naturally a matter of disappointment As I understand it we still have eleven silver delegates from Michigan If we lost them all it II would not prevent our controlling the convention We shall have a majority of 100 or more without counting any of the Michigan delegates If the loss of Michigan shall arouse i silver Democrats in other states to more determined effort and cause them to guard against betrayal the loss we have sustained may not be without its compensations |
