Show In the Cronin Case CHICAGO Nov 19The first witness in the Cronin trial this morning was Policeman Police-man Redmond McDonald He testified that ho saw Dan Coughlin at tho East Chicago police station between S45 and 9 oclock on the night of the murder On crossexami nation the witness fixed the time at 9 to 915 oclock The crossexamination developed de-veloped the fact that the witness was a member of Camp 20 ClannaGael Witness Wit-ness did not speak of the fact to anybody but Officer Scott who was also a member F Camp 20 until last Saturday when he told Captain Schuetler Witness said the fear of being mixed np in the matter kept him from speaking of it sooner The witness being asked when he first learned of the connection of Coughlins name with the horse and buggy in which Cronin was driven away stated it was before be-fore the body was found There was a sensation sen-sation when counsel for the prosecution asked the witness if he did not remember that Coughlins name was never connected with the horse in any manner in the public press until three days after the discovery of the doctors body William Mulcahey an employee of OSul livan testified that he heard OSullivan speak of his contract with Dr Cronin on the day of the murder The witness further fur-ther testified that OSullivan and he were on the ice wagon together they had supper sup-per together both read during the evening going to bed at the same time and sleeping in tho same bed CSullivan was not out of the house that night Witness also said he had heard a conversation between old man Carson and OSullivan about tho tenants of the Carlson cottage The old man testified that OSullivan said he knew that they were all right This witness testified tes-tified that OSullivan said he knew nothing of them The ground work was laid in the crossexamination for connecting tho witness wit-ness with the driver of the white horse who decoyed Cronin to his deatb but witness wit-ness denied that he let his beard prow at time or wore a different overcoat from that brought by him to the court room Mulcahey knew of OSullivans contract with Cronin having spoken once to his employer about a lame foot and being told to go to Cronin who was under contract to treat all of his men Edward Jones a Daily News reporter testified that he and another reporter went to the Carson cottage after the discovery of Cronins body As a joke they Jot some cotton batting and piece of liver and smeared the blood from the latter upon the cotton and put the bloodstained cotton in the cellar Witness denied that he put it there to furnish material for a sensation in his paper Three of OSullivans employees corroborated cor-roborated the evidence t establish a alibi for the iceman One of them told about distributing a number of OSullivans cards which had been produced in evidence evi-dence with a view to working up trade On crossexamination of Patrick Bren nan another employee of OSullivan the fact was brought out that the lawyers for the defense got a lot of their witnesses together to-gether at OSullivans house last Sunday and went over their testimony in tho presence pres-ence of the entire company Thomas Whalen whose wife kept the boarding house where OSullivan and his men lived was quite sure the iceman was not out of the house the night of the murder mur-der William Glenn an IrttcrOecan reporter testified that ono week after the murder Mrs Conklin told him thatthe white horso brought to her door from Dinans stable did not resemble the horse behind which Dr Cronin was driven away |
