and Reports The city council met at the usual hour last evening Mayor Armstrong na IB 1 the chair and the following business was transacted MORE LIGHT WANTED A J Pendleton and one hundred others requested re-quested to hare electric lights placed at convenient I conven-ient distances along Fifth East street from Second Sec-ond South street to Liberty park Mrs L L Johnson Henry Heath and others represented that the portion of the city lying between be-tween First and Fifth West streets on Third South is greatly in need of being lighted by the electric light that travel along said street at night requires the lighting or said streets at an tifly moment aad they asked that lights be I placed there Adam Spiers and others asked that the electric elec-tric light be placed on South Temple street to Eighth East and thence to Seventh South and that decent poles be used so that they would not be an eyesore to the publics public-s A Kenner J McMurrin and others real zing the fact that First East streetor the State road is traveled over more than any other street leading south of the city both by night as well as day asked the council to ex land the electric light at least three blocks further fur-ther south namely to the intersection of Fifth Sixth and Seventh South streets Committee on improvements Ebcr Case and others asked that electric lights 6e placed on Third South Fourth South and Fifth South streets TO ADOLISH A CANAL Ilyrum Kimball and other residents alone the Fiphth West street surplus canal called the attention at-tention of the council to the fact that there was no necessity for the canal and asked that it be abolished as it was a nuisance generally Referred to committee on irrigation TO COLLECT A DIrt Richards Rolapp said they had been employed em-ployed to collect IOWrora wellboring machine which had been purchased from a man named Roach in Ogden Committee on claims TIlE WATER MAINS H A Tuckctt represented that he and others had petition a year ago for the extension of water mains on First South street between Seventh and Ninth East and street abutting thereto Committee on waterworks Hewlett Bros represented that they had erected a large and substantial building on the State road between Seventh and Eighth South Erects for the purpose of manufacturing crated waters etc and asked that thy be allowed al-lowed to tap the the council IlELINQUISHES ALL CLAIMS William Carroll submitted the following Having learned that the Salt Lake Cycling club has applied for a lease on the east half of Washington square and learning that the city council has favorably considered the proposition proposi-tion I hereby certify that in consideration of a certain block of stock in the cycling club corporation corpor-ation I have to them relinquished all claims to any and all improvements made by me and placed on said squats and I respectfully request that you cancel the lease and agreement now in existence between myself and the city council pertaining to the said square Mr McCornick would like to know what rights he had to relinquish That good Thats the bcatwe have had yet Laid on the table to be considered later on IJQCOB by the ctMM refused AXOTHEll DEED GRANTED The committee on public grounds reported that they thought Susan M Edwards should be lowed a deed for land claimed by her Adopted LEASING THE SQUARE The committee whom had been referred the petition of the Salt Lake Cycling club asking that they be granted a lease of Washington square for a period of Jive years at an annual rental of 1230 recommended that it be granted a lease for three years with the privilege of two years more in case the grounds are not needed for public purposes It was understood the dub would not sublease to anyone Mr Young wanted to know whether this gave the club the exclusive use of the square Mr SharpYes Mr YoungWhat will the othor clubs do Jsnt the city well enough off to Hx up these grounds Itself J vc have got to square and make it attractive I do rot feel like turning over the only public square ni private corporation Sir Sharp reminded Mr Young that the citys management of the square so far had been an I absolute failure These gentlemen come and say that if we will give them a chance they will make a success out of it No one will be shutout shut-out All will be admitted by the payment of a reasonable sum for the enjoyment and use of the Improvements they Intend to put on Mr Young hoped he would not be deemed captious but these people had an idea that they would make money out of It They expect ex-pect no doubt to make enough out of the aqua r to pay for all improvements and a little beei lie was rather in favor of selecting some Spot in Liberty park and build such im proem nts as would be necessary to allow several games to be played at once and where all would be admitted free The Cycling club could get down to Liberty park easy enough It Is all wrong to make our citizens pay tribute to a private corporation Mr Roberts thought It all folly to think of riC iOte yf throwing the grounds open without a fee but it 1Jhht be arranged for other clubs to use the grounds when there was not a public exhibition Mr YoungWell I will agree to vote for the lease providing there is a clause inserted that will terminate the lease ath any time by paying them the amount they have eelelo We akould limit the prices to be charged Mr Bowles thought there was no reason to be litre tbat tee club would clwrr extortionate prices That would be impossible In order however that ho might further investigate the matter he moved that the further consideration be postponed Carried THE STREET SUPERVISOR The committee on streets reported that they found the last report of the street supervisor be correct and recommended that it be adopted TilE BUFFALO HERD Mr Lynch of Lynch i Glasmann was present pres-ent and informed the council that his firm had recently become Interested in the buffalo herd He gave a history of the attempts of Buffalo Jones to save the remnants of the great buffalo herds of the plains The buffalos or a portion of them would soon be here The territorial exposition grounds had been secured to exhibit them on and he asked that whatever license is usually exacted in such cases be remitted The petition was granted on motion of Mr Sowles TO EXCHANGE LAND The committee to whom had been referred the matter of exchange of land with Kelsey Gil le pie recommended that it be made Referred Re-ferred INCREASING THE POLICE FORCE The following resolution was adopted Resolved That in order to afford better protection pro-tection to the citizens of Salt Lake city the number of the regular police of this city be increased in-creased to twentyfive men and that the mayor nominate a sulllcicnt number of persons to act as policemen for the consideration of the council That the committee on police with the mayer and city marshal associated be required to redistribute re-distribute the police force so as to extend protection pro-tection to each munlcipel ward of the city MR JOHNSON GETS HIS DEED Eric O C Johnson was granted a deed to lot 4 block 104 Salt Lake city survey IN REFERENCE TO ELECTIONS A bill for an ordinance amending section 2 chapter of the revised ordinances of Salt Lake city was then passed It is as follows Be it ordained by the city council of Salt Lake city That section 2 of chapter 3 of the revised ordinances of Salt Lake city passed February 14 1685 be and the same is hereby amended oas to read as follows No person shall be elected or appointed to any office of bald city unless ho is a citizen of the United States and has been a resident of said city for one year next preceding such election or appointment Neither shall any person be eligible eligi-ble to vote at any election unless possessing the qualifications of a voter as prescribed by the laws of the United States and the territory of Utah and has been a resident in said city during dur-ing the month next preceding his registration UltrDGES WANTED William P Davis and others asked that a wagon bridge be nlaeed over the canal on Eighth West street at the crossing of South Temple htreeton the north side of the railway track also foot bridges over the abovementioned abovemen-tioned canal Committee on improvements THE CITY CREEK TUNNELS The committee on irrigation and associates presented the following which was adopted Your committee ou irrigation to whom was referred the duty of visiting the sources of water supply City Creek canon with the engineers in the employ of the city for the purpose of examining the work of development of said sources of supply respectfully report that on Monday November 18 18S9 your committee accompanied ac-companied by Mayor Armstrong Engineers Brooks and Jacobs Surveyor Fox Alderman McCornick Councilor Roberts and Recorder ellswent up City Creek canon and made athor oughexaminition the country We found the work done there had yielded a good return in water and that the men were engaged in driving a tunnel about a mile above the big spring In the main fork of the ca on They have developed devel-oped a good stream or water there and we recommend rec-ommend that the work be continued for the presnt The result of our examination was that we agreed upon a location about one hundred and fifty feet southwest of wh it is known as the big spring about seven and onehalf miles up said canon at which point we recommend that a tunnel be driven into the face of the hill at least live hundred feet and that said work be let by bidder after contract to the lowest responsible I due advertisement in three daily newspapers of the city for a period of at least ten days and we further recommend that the city recorder be instructed in-structed to insert said advertisement in said newspapers and that the mayor and committee on irrigation be authorized to open all bids received re-ceived and to award said contract TIlE REGISTRAR Mr Young presented the following resolution which was read the first time and ordered printed A bill for an ordinance amending section sec-tion 4 chapter 3 of the revised ordinances of Salt Lake city Be it ordained by the city council of Salt Lake city that section 4 of chapter chap-ter S of the revised ordinances of Salt Lake city passed February 14 1888 be and the same is hereby amended by adding thereto the following follow-ing words It bhall be the duty of the city registrar regis-trar in person and by deputy to be and attend at the city hall in Salt Lake city in an ofllce to be provided therein by the mayor of said city from 9 oclock a m until 12 oclock noon and from I oclock p m until G i oclock p m on each and every Friday and Saturday between the firstday of November and the third day of December De-cember preceding said election and to enter on registry lists the name of all qualified voters who may appear and comply with the provisions of this section This ordinance shall take effect Immediately upon its passage I Adjourned until Tuesday next at 730 p m |
