Schramm won a sportsmanship trophy. SpAROtDNCg ON For Akbar Tizpas karate class, the word unity means a lot. The class went to the University of Utah karate tournament Saturday and came home with 28 trophies. The small group of 21 did very well at the 200 competitor tournament. Because there was no crowd support for the contingent from Price, the classmates had to rely on team support, which was shown through an occasional pat on the back. We basically monopolized the tournament, Tizpa said. I feel that the kids especially showed confidence. Tizpa told of how two opponents of his students stopped dead in their tracks because they were scared. SaTUIuU)' The group came home with seven sportsmanship trophies. We showed the true spirit of karate, Tizpa said. We went to show skill not necessarily to win. I am very proud. Those winning sportsmanship trophies were Scott Oliveto, Amy Parson, Brent Duke, Marlon Duke, Jenny Tatton, Katie Thompson and Mike Schramm. This is the second year that Tizpa has taken a class to the tournament and 11 children and 10 adults participated. The competition was divided into two parts, the Cata, or form, and the Cumite, or sparring section. Those winning in their age groups in Cata were Omeid Tizpa, first; Brandon Olsen, third; Tom Parson, second; Evan Filmor, first; Careshmeh Tizpa, third; Lee Mathie, first; Tauna Tizpa, first: Gai Lee, third; and Jmi Kile, first place. Those winning trophies in their age group in Cumite were Omid Tizpa, first, Caieshmeh Tizpa, first; Filmor, second; Mathie, second; Biandon Olsen, first; Wade Olsen, third, and Alex Klnfets, first. Those adult winning were Tauna Tizpa, fust, Gar Lee, second; Kat.sunu Faison, thud; Edward Gates, thud; and Angie Filmore, second Last ycai the class took 17 people to the loutnanxnt and came home with 71 awards The next karate tollman" nt will lie next summer.
