DICKIES Americas best selling work wear The computer age has hit the Carbon School District as Charlotte Hanson, teacher at Durrant Elementary School, has viable incorporated the machines into learning-resourcfor instruction handicapped children. e Photo by Rick Egan Computers teach students the 'new' way to learn By ANGIE HYRE Staff Writer There is no talking back to this teacher and students might find it a bit hard to cheat on tests under the supervision of this special instructor. The teacher in this case is an Apple II computer and according to Charlotte Hanson, special education instructor at Durrant Elementary School, students are finding an exciting and new way to learn math and reading. Mrs. Hansons resource program is utilizing both teacher and computer to help students with learning handicaps. The class is oriented to getting the children back on track and able to learn in a regular group setting. It is a real motivating and exciting program, Mrs. Hanson said. The children love it and they really go for it. Currently, 35 students at Durrant are involved in the program. Mrs. Hanson said these children need an individualized program in reading, math, or both, because they are not working at expected achievement or up to grade levels. They are all intelligent children, she continued. But, somewhere in the process of learning they had a deficit. The program is very scientifically designed and utilizes the childs regular teacher, school principal, parents and Mrs. Hansons knowledge in special education. Amy Fossat, sixth grader, said working on the Apple II computer system helps her with her school Tina work. Catiglione, also a sixth grader, just completed a lesson with 100 percent of her answers correct. It teaches you how to read, Tina said. Its fun working on the computer. It makes learning easier. According to Mrs. Hanson, if a student is experiencing difficulties with school work he is referred to her for a special test to determine the learning deficiency. However, sixth grader Klint Foster became concerned about his reading problem on his own. As a fifth grader last year, Klint said he was reading at a low third grade level. He decided to approach Mrs. Hanson on his own accord to see if he could get some help. I became concerned about my reading because I wanted to get into a high college like Ricks, he said. I want to be a specialist doctor. Klint said he knew in order to pursue his goals he must read and comprehend his subjects more clearly. Thus, he entered the program at Durrant. My reading is perfect now, he said. My teacher gives the class reading assignments that should take a week to do and I get the work done in one day. While this program is going strong on the elementary level, Mrs. Hanson said if a child finishes sixth grade and still requires the special class, the junior high and high school have programs that continue the learning process. The success stories of her students with the application of the computer system are numerous, Mrs. Hanson said. Every year I have a high percentage of students who come up to grade level, she said. I find it very rewarding and a stimulating challenge. No one has been able to duplicate our unique Frye look. Or our unique Frye quality.
