Show Wednesday, December Praises coaches To the Editor: I would like to make a few comments about the article in last weeks Sun Advocate written by Richard H. Morley. I feel Dicks article did a great injustice to many Carbon and Emery County Junior High and High School football coaches, as well as the many Uttle League football coaches, who have been so dedicated over the years. I feel Dick Morley is living in the past. Whether he knows it or not, there have been many changes in this area over the past 30 years. First of all, Junior High football was dropped in Carbon County in 1959. Some dedicated and concerned men then organized a little league football program encompassing Carbon and Emery Counties, with the hope of exposing boys to the sport of football, before they entered High School. This program was for boys in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades. This program was most effective, but was not Junior High football. Three years ago, football was once again put back into the Junior High Schools. Therefore, this years Seniors have never played Junior High football. We will see, as time goes on, whether Junior High football will give a boost to the High School team, but it is certainly too soon to tell. Therefore, it is unfair to blame Junior High School football coaches for the present situation. Second, 30 years ago Carbon High School football talent was drawn from Price Jr. High, Helper Jr. High, Notre Dame Jr. High, and East Carbon Jr. High. In 1959 East Carbon High School was built, which took away from the Carbon High School football program. I see these two factors contributing to the decline of Carbon High School football, but I do not agree with the statement that this decline was caused by past and present football coaches. I do agree with Dick that 30 years ago the football team was supported physically by the local business community, a factor that does not exist today. However, I feel the support was for the football players, not for the coaches. A winning team comes from many factors, coaching, conditioning, determination, talent, support, and the timing to have all of these conditions present at the same time not whether a coach uses tobacco or profanity. Our son is now involved in sports at Carbon High School, lie has a very high opinion of all of his coaches, both football and basketball. I do not want to take anything from the Class of 51, since my husband was a contributing factor to this championship football team, but what about the Classes of 39 through 50 and the Classes of 52 through 82? I feel those teams and coaches had a lot of heart and should not be put down. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the football coaches in the Carbon and Emery County areas for their time and effort, not only for our boy, but also for all of the boys who have benefited by your untiring dedication. Alice Beacco Price Champion coaches To the Editor: It is difficult for me to com- prehend which coaches, Carbon High or CEU, that Dick Morley was taking a crack at in his rambling discourse as your guest columnist in the Castle Country Observer of Dec. 8. Through the years, I have been very close to the athletic scenes at both schools and cannot make sense out of his article. If he is attacking Jeff Jorgenson at CEU, let me remind him that Jorgenson took over a football program that was in shambles after the Ed Cody fiasco and but for the matter of a few points, could of very well shared the ICAC title this past season with Snow College, this after only two years on the job. If it is former Carbon High or present Dino coaches he is digging at, let me say that I have never met finer gentlemen than Jackson Jewkes, Lou Mele, Boyd Bell, Tom Rabb, Jerry Dyer or Mike Kernodle, the fellows who have followed Press Summerhays as Carbon High gridiron coaches. This group may never have produced a championship team at Carbon but I have never known smoking as one of their problems with their athletes or even themselves. As for swearing, we all let off a little steam when frustrated at times with a few cuss words we really didnt want to say and may be sorry for later. Try it sometime, Dick, when all seems to be going wrong. Walter Borla Helper Another opinion bad. door. It wanted out Things went way good till the dog pointed out that we forgot the stupid star on top the tree. We went sad fast cuz we had spent a quick eight hours fixin that tree. We cut cards down to me and my third grader but a flip of a coin eliminated the curtain crawler. So there was I. Afraid of heights, allergic to green needles, and scared of electricity. But I didnt cry ... much. I just climbed. The stand were only a warm up and werent no great obstacle. Up I went, grabbin popcorn strings, kickin away at them glass globes, and breathin in a whole bunch of silver tinsel between sneezes. I worked my way up branch by branch and had it almost made when the fake bird, thinkin I was a cat or and somethin, come alive started tweetin. The wife and kids yelled GOODIE!, the snake froze, and the dog also come alive. That dum mutt musta thaought I was a giant pidgeon cuz he dumb right up behind me and gnashed me way bad. He was thrashin me good till the tree give up. We tottered and swayed and all three of us fell. Me, the dog, and the tree. The wife and kids kept yellin, the bird kept tweetin, the dog kept gnashin, and the python started playin covered wagons and indians. He had us all circled and was just startin to squeeze spit out of us when the dog bit into a extension cord. It happened fast. Yes, we were a w inning team, because we had the support of our parents and friends present at our games and practices, and a very supporting Boosters Club headed by Forrest Smith, who always had a goodie or a cold drink for us after the games. That made us feel good and showed we were appreciated for our efforts. Our local newspaper supported us with pictures and even sponsored a first and second Junior High football team. Our coaches guided us to our defeats and victories, and our virgin ears and minds were made ready for the world outside of high school. I dont remember any of us suffering from an over active Thymus gland. You get out of a sport what you put into it. The dog went into convulsions, the snake lit on fire, and the kids eyes kept lightin up every other second. There werent much left to do except clean up this, bury that, and buy a big gun. My kids has been naggin bout puttin up the tree since July. So I did, and it werent no picnic, you know. We got the tree up and stuffed it very good with different colored lights (what come on and off every other second) and other fancy things like a fake plug-i- n bird what was broke and didnt chirp.
