Show WedThursFri, January 15-17; 2003 The Park Record B-3 Girls hoops falls one point short Continued from B-1 ing the rim before falling out of bounds. j "I was hoping she made 'em. hut if not, I was hoping we could f&ul quick enough to get the ball track.- That didn't happen," Grandall said. Still, considering "the way the Miners played early, it's a bit surprising sur-prising they were in a position of contention at all. ,Park City scored just eight points in the first quarter and totaled only 20 in the first half. After twice trailing by as many as lJf, the team settled for a 13-point deficit at the break. J "I don't know what the problem was, since Judge didnt shoot the ball exceedingly well," Crandall said. . "It might've been fur defense. We opened in a 1-3-1, and that didn't really work, so we switched to a 2-3 zone and that seemed to help some. Still, I'm not sure what was wrong " The situation could have been far worse, considering that star tweener Grace Crandall, one of the state's top five scorers, had zero points in the half. , "She was playing a little timid; she was not doing what she needed to do to create shots and get open," coach Crandall said. . Fortunately for the Miners, Mey, traditionally a defensive stopper who'd scored just 22 points all season coming in (1.8 ppg), had 10 in the first half en route to a season-high 12 for the game, keeping things relatively , close. " ;c " "Val made her free throws in the first half. She missed that last one, and obviously she's real unhappy about that, but she really picked up the slack for us in the first half," Crandall said. In the third quarter, the Miners really picked up the pace. Th'ey came out in a full-court press that rattled the Judge players, creating confusion and mayhem in the backcourt that led to some easy buckets. Crandall finally got a score on a layin 40 seconds into the quarter, and PCHS went on an 11-4 run to narrow the gap to 40-31. And while the Bulldogs fcsponded with their own 6-0 run fj5 revert back to a 15-point lead. Park City ended the quarter Chanks to JMHS foul trouble and subsequent Miner free throws an 8-z spurt to end tne period down only nine. . , - ; ''In retrospect," I should" have gone" 1:6 the full-court 'press irffhe- first half, but I was worried about foul trouble." Crandall said. "In the second half, we didnt have a ihoice, and the girls ran it better than they. ever have." - To start the fourth, the Miners' press was more like a vice, as Judge committed four turnovers in first two minutes and was held ,vhhout a score for the first 2:55. And the eight fouls the Bulldogs Bad been whistled for in the third period played a factor, as Park fity shot free throws on every ensuing hack. ! Still though, at that crucial juncture, Park City failed to capitalize, capi-talize, becoming a recidivist in the poor execution department. Cfandall airballed the front end of and-l. then short-armed a layup (pi a 3-on-l fast break. Point guard t" I: Nicole Tomlin followed by bricking brick-ing a pair of free throws, and when Mey grabbed the offensive rebound, Tomlin crashed into lane on a drive , and was called for charging. "I told the girls just to take it one possession at a time," Crandall said when asked how he tried to settle his players down. "1 said, 'Take it chance by chance, possession by possession.'" With that in mind, the Miners got within 48-46, as Crandall buried a trey. Crystal Christiansen hit a driving layup, and Crandall added a pair from the charity stripe. ITie levity was short-lived, however. how-ever. On their ensuing possessions, guard J.D. Harris got a steal, but fellow guard Krista Berry missed an open jumper; Berry then stole a pass, only to get whistled for travelling trav-elling as she raced downcourt; Mey dropped a ball out of bounds; a Tomlin pass to Crandall was picked off; center Kali Judkins missed a layin; Mey shanked two freebies; and Christiansen took and missed a wild, off-balance turnaround. And despite all that, the Miners still only trailed 52-46. Harris hit two-of-three foul shots after getting hacked on a bomb, but Crandall missed a turnaround, turn-around, Harris traveled again, and Judge's Erin Terry hit two free throws for a 54-48 lead with 1 :37 to go. v!" ' One more bit of intense defensive defen-sive pressure, though, gave the Miners yet another chance. On three consecutive possessions, posses-sions, Crandall hit two from the line, Harris got a steal and a layup, and Judkins converted a post layin, creating a 54-54 tie with 36 seconds to go. Tomlin, however, was too aggressive as Terry brought ihe ball up. and committed a foul with 15.9 seconds remaining. When Terry hit both FTs. and Park City's Judkins was fouled with 10 seconds left, but missed both of her opportunities, it appeared the Miners' last chance was gone. However. Judge's Megan Skiles clanked both shots, and with 9.7 seconds remaining, PCHS had one last opportunity. The team rushed downcourt and offered up a couple of hurried, off-target attempts. Mey got the rebound and a foul, but not the two, conversions .she needed. ' However; while Mey missed the final 'attempGproblems vat the-'-charity stripe were hardly limited to her. All total, PC. hit just 23-of-42 free throws (54.8 percent), including just 7-of-16 (43.6 percent) per-cent) in the fourth, to go along , with six fourth-quarter turnovers. , "Those are not things we normally nor-mally do; those are things that hurt." Crandall said. "I can- live with the turnovers, because the pace of the game was fast and we were playing aggressive, but the missed free throws... We don't normally do that." Crandall wound up leading the Miners with 17 points, while Terry had 15 for Judge (7-5.2-0). Park City was back in action on Jan. 14 at Uintah (results were not available as of press time), and the team's next game is a home affair versus Union on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. IforlTATiiOML?
