As the Slamdance's reputation began to grow, the festival ,' '"',. outgrew its bastard stepchild image into one with much m 0 r e . respectability, said Dobson. "It's easier to get high-profile high-profile journalists jour-nalists and distributors dis-tributors to actually come to the festival now," he said. Utah isjhe2nd.driest.state in the nation. 1. 2. 3. Slamdance's higher profile snowballs into more opportunities opportu-nities for his clients' movies, which attach more success stories to the festival. The 43 entries submitted for Slamdance's first year has been overshadowed by the more than 2,800 films that arrived for consideration this year. This growth is a sign of the independent, low-budget film industry growing, said Baxter. ' ' The growth has also caused an influx of film festivals that tout themselves as an alternative to Slamdance, which has to reject far more movies than it accepts. That sort of entrepreneurship is admired and welcomed by Baxter. As the world of first-time filmmakers becomes larger, more fractured, there is a need tor more film festivals, festi-vals, he said, and the Slamdance website has links to dozens of them. Picking films The programming pro-gramming committee com-mittee consists of approximate ly 40 people, mmmm most of whom are filmmakers from past Slamdance festivals. After the submitted films were reviewed at least twice, the programmers get together for four days and no one leaves until the festival is programmed, pro-grammed, according to programming director Nubia Flores. ' The origin and history of a movie up for review is irrelevant. We do care about finding good Slamdance films. A Slamdance film is original, rebellious, provocative, provoca-tive, captures and demonstrates an independent spirit, and contains half a cup of happy and half a cup :. of 1 angry," she outlined on the website. Slamdance rules dictate that eligibility for competition competi-tion includes: the film must be the director direc-tor first feature, fea-ture, the film cannot have . domestic distribution dis-tribution in place, the budget must be roughly under $1 million. mil-lion. From more than 2,800 entries, the programmers chose 36 films for competition com-petition and 27 for non-competitive screenings. Gaining entry into Slamdance, "means somebody some-body has decided to be passionate to make a film," said festival director Chachere. "Those . films tend to be more interesting. ' Can success still equal alternative? "The non-commercial feel is still a part of Slamdance," said Chachere. The festival's grassroots beginnings are still in place, according to everyone associated with the festival. Success has allowed it to affect more filmmakers, but not to the extent of discarding its original intent . One of the outgrowths of the organization's mission mis-sion to help first-time, first-time, low-budget filmmakers is the festival's relatively small size. With only 63 films, including shorts, it intentionally falls short of matching the number of films in the Sundance Film Festival. Instead of growing the festival, the organization organiza-tion has grown its mission to a year-round endeavor. The organization supports online screen competitions, com-petitions, screenwriter's competitions and Bootcamp for filmmakers. Slamdance also organizes On The Road programs that screen festival highlights across the United States. On The Road has also expanded into Poland and China. 2003 highlights if" This year's film festival has grown.. Documentaries, once competing against other nonficxion narratives, have their own category this year. There is more variety among the films this year and more comedies, said Baxter. The organization will also continue its relation rela-tion with the Park City Film Series and negotiate A Slamdance film is original, rebellious, provocative, captures and demonstrates an independent spirit and contains half a cup of happy and half a cup of angry. The surprise ending Despite having the full-time, year-round job of being the president of the Slamdance Film Festival, Baxter is still an avid and active filmmaker film-maker himself: Through the $99 Special program, pro-gram, Baxter assumes the role of producer. In addition to helping other filmmakers Baxter has a project he is currently working on. With that he has created his own irony: None of his films will likely appear during any upcoming Slamdance film festivals., , y i - "Slamdance tries to be as fair it as possibly can. Showing my own films doesnt seem appropriate," he said. And so the Slamdance alum and president must find another venue to show his films.
