In fact, Blockbusters across the country have established "Sundance" sections in deference to the popularity of the Park City festival. Make a list of past film festival winners that you missed (there is a complete list of all the winners since 1978 in this publication). Chances are, they are on the shelves at Blockbuster. Rent a handful, invite a group of friends over, order in some Teriyaki Express and host your own film festival. GO ONLINE The Sundance Institute prides itself on keeping up with the latest technology and for the past few years it has offered an eclectic collection of online films. If you are sneaky you can tap into a Sundance experience right from your desk at work. If you are looking for some good conversation starters definitely plug into a few of this year's online selections. They are intriguingly weird as any emerging experimental art form should be. This year's collection (go to www.sundance.org , click on Festival Homepage and then Online Festival.) There you will find a palette of animated and short subjects. A caveat though, don't try this if you are on a tight deadline. dead-line. Many of the "films" require special downloads and megabytes of memory. Plan to spend some time watching the install wizard and perhaps freezing up your company's accounting files. PICK A REALLY WEIRD FILM Look, if you want to see a standard chick flick, a formula Disney classic or a bloody action movie, go to the nearest 24-plex and add your $6.75 to some studio tycoon's multibillion dollar weekend. But that is not what Sundance is all about. The beauty of independent film is that these artists want to say something new, they want to change the world, they want to break the rules. Sometimes it works and sometimes it is awful. The fact that these movies do not yet have Hollywood's seal of approval and the required number num-ber of thumbs up from the critics is very liberating. You are the critic, and at Sundance you can actually cast a vote for your favorite and help launch a young filmmaker's career. And remember this, when it comes to post-Sundance bragging rights, a bad film is just as much fun to talk about as a good one. FREEBIES AT THE ECCLES As a thank-you to Park City for any inconvenience caused by the two-week film festival ruckus, the Sundance Institute hosts an annual free screening night at the Eccles Center. Every year on the Monday evening following the festival, one of the winning documentaries and one of the dramatic winners is screened to a full house. This is a must-see opportunity that will be offered this year on Monday, Jan. 27. But if you go, expect a line and be especially nice to the ushers who have probably spent the last 247 corralling cor-ralling temperamental movie stars and overeager fans into and out of the nightly premieres. yr 435-785-5196 EXPERIENCE .fisMMm J i A tatty? r nTTir .- TEccpEin KNOWLEDGE 'U-hW REAL K STATE Lew Fine Great Corporate Retreat or "Large Family 1451 Eagle Way Aerie 3 Home it 4-ij .3 6 Bedrooms, 2 Family Rooms, 1 Office (could be converted con-verted to media room, small kitchen in office area).
