Show AN IRREVFtENT LOOK AT 20 YEARS OF SUNDANCE c5 X (4 V. ( Over the years, Film Festival Sundance, its clones, sequels, prequels, and groupies has changed a lot. So has Park City. In the early days, when it was a low-budget, low-profile operation, it showed it. Film Festival people developed a reputation of occupying a restaurant table for the better part of the day while ordering only coffee. People with a clear vision for a film, but only a vague notion of winter at 7,000 feet, wandered the streets in rumpled black clothes, half frozen from sleeping in their cars. Locals learned to deal with it on a "cash only" basis. Big money studios, to the extent they participated at all, treated it as a Third World posting, and brought their food with them. As the Festival grew up, things began to change. Parking became difficult. There were still the clueless Angelinos schlepping around Park City's slush covered streets in open-toed, stiletto-heeled shoes, or water-soluble Gucci loafers. People hoping to be discovered wore identical black clothing to better blend into the crowd. Only recently have the costume design ers for the affair approved the use of a few non-primary colors. Now, you can differ entiate the anxious attendees by whether they are wearing a pea-green scarf or strange orange hat with their black-on-black wardrobes. The contrast with the usual ski parkas of bright red, blue and yellow is pretty shocking. It looks like the whole town has trnnvintn mnurnintr heranse the rannurrinn machine has hrnken o o ri i again. y- There was a time when the Festival happened without cell phones, know that seems impossible, as if the movies were shown on Nickelodeons or without sound. But it s true. There was a time when cell phones hadn't been invented, and then, for several blissful years, there wasn't service in the Park Please see Sundance Side on page 26 o Winter Freeze-Up Problems Solved!
