An explosion of dynamite In a tunnel 100 feet below be-low the surface of East river, between be-tween Manhattan and P-rookljn, early ear-ly today resulted In the Injury of sin workmen, at least one of whom will die. The tunnel, a tremendous engineering engineer-ing project, is being bored through the mud and rock of the river bed and when finished will contain a huge sen Ice pipe to supply the Island of Manhattan with gas manufactured in an outlying suburb of Brooklyn. Tho six men were at work In tho tunnel when the explosion occurred. They had sot off a. number of dynamite dyna-mite blasts during the night, but several sev-eral of them apparently failed to explode. ex-plode. Tho men, thinking thoy had gone off, went back to tho shaft to work.
