crowing up aro are entitled to know something of the early history of this locality benco sta sha asks tho the news to give space to the following which la Is cheerfully granted fd ed on the day of april 1853 the first white man and his family located on three mile creek in box bos elder county ile iio was assisted in mot in by his son in law hyrum pew who brought one wagon load for hinl him the little company pitched camp on a dark carz rainy night it being so dark that my father could not find the spot that ho he had chosen to locate on on one year previous my father and grandfather came in the spring ot of 1852 to select a claim but owing to sickness in fathers family he did not no move MOTO his family that year and upon going ba back ck south grandfather nokes took a liking to the country around Spring springville ville and decided to move his hie family there which bo be did leaving caving my father to come north alone with hla his family the morning atter after our arrival arr lva may dawned clear and bright and we celebrated mayday by moving onto I 1 tho lo tract of land father had st elected near a spring somo some ground was ivas also plowed in order bilat that we might raise a little wheat and garden vegetables and father went up on the mountain and plowed a ditch leading down from tho the canyon in order to got water with which to irrigate our land my father and brother in law also cut some stakes which they thoy drove into the ground and made a platform upon which the wagon boxes wore were placed in order to elevate them out of reach of the pigs which were running around loose the following morning lay iny brother inlaw in law started back to salt lake city and I 1 recall how lonely wo we felt as we were the only persons in the place I 1 had read the story of the babes in ia the woods and child like I 1 began telling my little sisters about it but by mother hushed me floe between her tears telling me not to talk like that mother was afraid ot of indians indiana as we vic vi c had no neighbors closer than a family w wio 0 resided at what is now the old woods place north of willard Wll lard and owens who resided to thoi north of us at what was ana then tha settlement we were father mother end five alvo little girls and our earthly possessions consisted of 0 a wagon two yoke of cattle battlo three cows one me calf ono one mare two tao largo large hogs three small hogs hoga and eighteen chickens I 1 the next settlers to come to bo perry after my fathers family were lorenzo perry and wife and william walker and hla his sister they camo came about three weeks after wo we did and remained that summer they erected a log room sear near my fat fathers bers place but returned to farmington to winter returning on the day of the following march which was in tho the year 1854 bringing bather father perrys family with them tho the home that lorenzo perry had built and left was occupied for the winter by four men all of whom were gentiles one of them thomas elliott had bad been to california and then wont back east to get a herd of eattle cattle engaging the other men to assist him and they were forced to roina romain iii with us over winter as it wils too late to venture on farther the cattle belonged to elliot the other members of the party were a young american whose name I 1 have iorg forgotten otten nix nil irishman by name patrick obrien Lix and aad a spaniard na named d raphael Luter ls they were all very brave men but kind of disposition and they were armed to the WOW teeth as we say upon two occasions during the winter th they ey fought a whole hoe hand band of indians indiana and drove them off both ot of which attacks I 1 were brought upon them through their lole loic of a little fun and their determination f to to protect their property thu the first occasion was brought about as follows an indian camo came to their cabin door one day and asked for food the men had made some soup with drop dumplings dump lings like mother used to make but the finished article was a disappointment in that it burned soup dumplings dump lings and all the men could eat very little ot of their meal so when the indian came ho he was invited to help himself which he be did with apparent relish until his hunger was satisfied then ho be made off to leave there was still some soup in the kettle tl and thinking to have a little fun the men drew their revolvers and commanded him to eat cat it all which ho he did with reluctance but to their great amusement the entire balance ot of the tao day next nest morning a largo large rand dand of indians indiana surrounded their cabin and the chief informed tho the men that one of 0 their number was sick nl as a result I 1 of being compelled to mt eat so BO much burned soup the day clay before and pay was demanded from the men for treating him thus they thay asked for flour meat and blankets which the men refused to give them and after some parlance the indiana rode off the other occasion was wai when elliot threshed an indian for stealing bia calves cutting his f fco face co up terribly A number ot of calaca had bad disappeared from tho ibo herd so one wat night elliot went out and concealed himself near ille the corral to capture the thief I 1 in athe the early morning an indian rode into the iho herd and throw a lasso around the a flue fat calf and started off on the run elliot dodged around among the cattle and caught up to tho the redskin who had stopped some little distance away to see it tho call calf was dead elliot pounced upon him and began whipping him applying the imph lash until the indian wa was nearly dead ilia HN faco was so eo terribly cut up that my mother named him Scab nose a name that clung to him after that As before the indians indiana camo came next morning and doin demanded pay but the four men stood out in front ot of them and gave them to understand that they could not bo be frightened neither did they propose to sit quietly by while their stock was being stolen thus the incident closed but mother and we children were scarly toa death anti andi have never forgotten it there were seven scorn persons in grandfather perrys family lorenzo perry lived in tho the house he be had built the summer before and grandfather perry lived in the house ili that at was built for hyrum perry he having moved up there during the winter gut but ho he had bad lost his yoke ot of oxen and one cow in a day so BO ho he hired out to help elliot drive dr i ve his herd of cattle on toward california lie ile returned in the fall with a man by the name ot of louis i sholes who brought in a be herd rd of stock to winter from out near this thi louls louia sholes was the en engineer ginee who surveyed d the railroad from california to ogden mr boarded with my father that winter and let his hia stock graze graz on the bottom land to the west if he mado made a number of aripa tripa to salt lake city on horseback and once by team in the spring of asael thorn moved into the neighborhood and settled on the claim that was selected by by grandfather nokes and later by wm win tattersall Totter sall in the ta fa of 0 tho the same year the family of henry perry alonzo perry and son and angus mcdonald arrived my father sold the north half of his farm to henry perry and removed his family to the house that was built for hyrum perry ire he received for tho the farm five hundred dollars two yoko yoke ot of oxen being espart as part payment and the balance in money my illy father
