lade lack of seating accommodation did not not seem to 6 worry them much for as tho the number grow tho the gentlemen sat on the floor or stood as suited them hero is the curious part of the story at a gentleman came in and drew my inar attention to the f fact act that the wind blowing bany any more this gentleman did not bring a parcel with him ho he brot an armchair instead ile he sat in it most of the evening and ho he said he guessed winter was over the rest refit of the party guessed in unison that winter was overt over too I 1 guessed guessed it inwardly I 1 believe in the possibility of winter whiter coming coining to a halt in that abrupt fashion when it had got into its stride lo 10 so to speak and was breaking all it records I 1 was wrong I 1 make this confes backache headache most of oe up the very remembrance of which causes as to sit down very gingerly when ten or a dozen had arrived it dawned on us that this was not I a mero conci confidence dence but was a deeply laid plot they took possession ot of the house then tho mysterious parcels were opened 0 and d the pilo pile of provender was heaped upon tho the table tabe appealing in its hugeness there were v cre seat scat this was what they call bere I a surprise party N B al AI the surprises surp risers were mor mons only the surprised were gentiles for three or four days alter after this tho the whole valley swam in the melting sno snow wand I 1 and ice ce but in ill a the garden lots let were were dry enough to make plough I 1 ing ng possible and every body got busy nil ill at once dy by the end of the month 0 of f march I 1 was waa tanned as good a brown as it if I 1 had bad just spent august bank holiday at yarmouth wo we had a lew few cold days in april ind and two or three severe night frosts as well the temperature was down to 63 16 19 degrees ono one night with disastrous results to the peach crop but tor for all that winter really ended it at the time I 1 have stated the snow oai on a the mountains did not all disappear until june and on the higher peaks about salt lake city snow could be s seen oen until late july on may 16 an event took place hero here of a most interesting kind to me at least and I 1 think to some gomo scores of young people belonging to box elder eldee county as well it wits was tho the presentation of certificates to all the boys and girls who had succeeded in passing out of tho the eighth grade a at t the elementary a schoola ch ool 9 of the con county nty everything is done to fo make this event one to be remembered by the successful students as one of jhc thc most important in in their lives the tabernacle being the largest and most conveniently situated building in tho the city was used and was tastefully decorated for the tho occasion the whole of 0 tho the members of 0 tho the education board occupied the platform the mayor of the city mr blackburn backburn was waa pres present tnt but took no part in the proceedings tho the building was crowded with relatives and friends or of the students and tho the general pub jhc he tho r students occupied the space 0 immediately below tho the platform I 1 tho boya M 0 o their best told that tho the song waz was the composition ot of on gnp 0 ot tho the boy graduates I 1 it wend with a graat great alter prayers a 1 pro gramme I 1 of vocal rf anc and I 1 instrumental music with oh oha or two elocutionary items was most abst excellently rendered by tho the boys boya and girls one of the boys delivered a address to the grade schools and teachers an adar ss wa was a a by the president of tle the state slate agricultural Agrical tui al college it at logan who talked good practical common I 1 sense to t the be graduates and was jis is toned tenca to with the most profound pro round attention then the file graduates filed up to the platform and one by one ed their certificate of grada avon at on and a phoud handsome lot they were As the graduates from the several in the county were called upon it was mide av tant b by y the cheers which greeted them that relatives and friends from all over the county were present just before tho the close of the proceedings ce cc the graduates were addressed by the headmaster of the box bos elder high school professor merrill who spoke of the advantages to be derived by tho the graduates from a continuation of their studies and earnestly impressed upon them the wisdom of entering the high school 11 he also extended to them an in to come over to tho the high school when the present function vaa over to a tion to given by bj the senior students of tho the ailigh high school most of them went I 1 believe and I 1 heard afterwards th that at they had a high old time now all al this struck me as a splendid idea why cannot wo we at home do something of the sort tor for the boys and girls who succeed in passing the ath ah standard copt you think thick that something som othine of the sort would be an incentive to many oi ol 01 our boys and girle many of whom never pass the highest standard to preserve in their studies I 1 do and I 1 also that po possibly sEibly some parents might make a greater effort to keep the children at school a 1 little longer than they otherwise might I 1 know that the bos and girls here look forward to this annual event with eager anticipation and to those who have grad it becomes a pleasant memory of their first really great achievement I 1 really think that northampton could go one better than grisham brigham may was decoration da next to independence day the most important of the national holidays for days before hand the lie cemetery was in eve cv crones rones thoughts and numbers of people spent a good deal of time in making the graves of their relatives look neat and tidy vehicles of all sorts from Micel wheelbarrows barrows to wagons were requisitioned ta remove the accumulated accumulate 4 rubbish so BO that by the evening of the nothing remained ito to be ba done except to decorato decorate the graves early neilt morning most mose of the graves were decked with flowers and greenery some of them wore were ery cry beautifully cledor decorated aledas as was the grave ota ofa poor young lad well known to many blany in northampton who had died hero here some 15 months ago I 1 mean young jack leadbeater of welling borod boroush road diioro and there the sar spangled banner waved over the grave of romo bamo old soldier and the whole cemetery looked as bright and cheerful as a cemetery can tho the un tain city band gave a conceit I 1 in the cemetery the music being appropriate to tho the place and the occasion on tho Odd fellows were there in ill their in their regalia re salia and one another ol of tho the brethren aavo short es ca to eife alic d listeners s thea people remained in and about th the e cemetery until about noon and spent tho the rest of alo day in such manner as pleased them best talking of cemeteries reminds me that I 1 was in the cemetery at willard about seven mils south of brigham a few weeks ago and came across a tall monument nent to the memory of an old Northampton ian gifth the following inscription alfred great darior born beorn at shire england juno june G ath th 1795 pied died juno june 8 1873 I 1 learned afterwards thai tha the old follow bought the stone stoat and had the inscription cut cup as far as the word died some considerable time before his death and insisted on having the words spelt as aa he deemed right I 1 another monument is to tho the memory 0 r 0 of f I 1 thomas vose horn born jan 12 now it is called vr a shakie kic and is some thirty miles northwest north west of this place the town consists of somo soine built of lois logs some bomb fam hinline inline In line e houses and scattered about here and there are arc tho the wigwams or lodges or tepees we so often in pictures there is only ono brick dwelling in the place and in that live tho the mormon bishop and his hia family these indians indiana all profess Morn mormonism at homo home in Washa washakie kic tho the indian bravo brave wears the prosaic garments of civilization but makes no effort to repair them when torn or worn out the squaw wears somo some sort of a skirt but her hek most noticeable garment seems to be a red shawl or blanket I 1 saw several squaws squads sewing beads upon buckskin busk skin andam told they do a good deal of this kind of 0 work but I 1 saw no men men doing anything except one who was driving a wagon and team they seem scorn to have plenty of horses and chickens but I 1 saw no cows their children all go to school and I 1 nm am told they make fairly good progress too but are handicapped handi very much by having to learn earn their ls in what to them is a strange lang
