Judge Memorial Girl Wins Essay Contest A thrilling experience awaits a Judge Memorial High School girl this month as a result cf an es-say she wrote. Sharon Garrett of 2462 Beverly St. was declared winner last week of the $1,000 first prize in the 1957 national essay contest of the President's Committee on the Employment of the Physi-cally Handicapped. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Garrett. Miss Garrett, along with four other winners, will receive her award from President Eisenhower on May 23. The occasion will be the annual meeting of the Presi-dent's special committee in Wash-ington, D.C. Her winning essay describes "The five ages of physically handicapped man:" extermination, ridicule, injustice, education and total rehabilitation. In the conclusion of the essay, Miss Garrett writes: "Only when there is a universal consciousness and awareness that employment of the disabled is a community responsibility will we truly have attained the fifth age of physically handicapped man total rehabilitation." Mill Creek Girl, 6 Chosen Dystrophy Poster Girl In Utah Utah's Musclar Dystrophy "Fos-ter Girl," and possibly the na-tion's "Poster Girl," is Peggy Ann Barnthouse. Peggy Ann, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Barnthouse, 1037 Millcreek Way. will repre-sent Utah in the national poster contest of the Muscuar Dystrophy Association of America. Little Peggy Ann, who will en-roll in school this summer for kindergarten, is one of more than 250 known victims of the crippling disease in Utah. She has never walked and must wear a full body brace to sit up in a wheel-chair. The "Poster Girl" selection coincides with the 1957 member-ship drive of the Utah MDAA chapter. Membership is opened to victims of the disease, members of their families and any other interested persons. Four Sugar House area young-sters displayed their artistic tal-ents last month to win "runner-iin- " hnnnrs in the Deseret News Easter Coloring Contest. The winners, announced last week, will receive water - coloring sets. They are: Cathy Carrier, 5, 1620 - 15th East; Robyn Shep-herd, 6, 2807 E. 2850 South; Cathy Jean Christiansen, 10, 1725 Downington, and Michael Van Wagenen, 12, 159 Parkway Ave. To qualify for the Easter con-test, each youngster colored three cartoon panels featuring Bugs Bunny and his friends. Contract Approved The Salt Lke County Com-mission has signed a contract with the State Road Commission covering installation and main-tenance of a semaphore t the intersection of Highway 40 and Foothill Blvd. at the mouth of rarleys Canyon. The contract for the semi-actuat- ed signal was signed last week. According to plans, the light was show green constantly on the Highway 40 sign until Foot-hill Blvd. pressure plate trips the signal. County road shop officials said last week that the signal would be installed in 10 days to two weeks. They were waiting for a power line to be run to the intersection by power crews. Under terms of the contract, all materials are furnished by the state and the county will install and maintain the signal. E. H. (Biff) Azbill Gains High Position E. H. (Biff) Azbill, 1761 E. 3015 South St., has been elected to a high national Chamber of Commerce position. Mr. Azbill has become new president of the National Associ-ation of Membership Directors of Chambers of Commerce. He is manager of the industrial and membership departments of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Com-merce. He was elected to the new posi-tion at the concluding sessions of the national convention in Mem-phis, Tenn. He has been first vice president of the organization and was the first local representa-tive to the national association in 1953. In 1955 he was elected sec-retary and treasurer. Southeast Students Win Granite Posts Several Southeast area students have been elected new officers at Granite High School. Elections wprp hpld last Thnrsrtav. Sheila Sullivan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Sullivan, of 4300 Highland Dr., was elected the school's new secretary. Sally Gull, daughter of Mrs. Lavern Gull, 1430 Woodand Ave., was named one of the new senior senators. Among the new junior senators chosen were Kay Gehrke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Owen, 4525-13t-h East, and Sam Zig-ross- i, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Zigrossi, 1067 E. 33rd South. Highland Stake of the LDS Church will hold quarterly con-ference May 18 and 19. Mark B. Garff of the Church Welfare Committee has been assigned as presiding general authority.
