Show Escalante S&R Teams Report Two Rescues By Linda Mansell ESCALANTE Garfield County Search and Rescue, Escalante Division, participated in two recent rescues. On Oct. 4 the Escalante S&R team rescued a male visitor from Brooklyn, N.Y. who was immobilized immo-bilized in quicksand up to his knees six miles down the river in the Coyote Gulch area. He had been hiking alone and was discovered dis-covered by other hikers who went for help. Escalante S&R responders were: Keven Peterson, Jennifer Brewer, Sheriff Dave Jones, Mike Murphy and Linda Mansell. The rescue party departed the Redwell Trailhead at 10:30 p.m. and were back in Escalante, after a successful rescue, at 5:30 a.m., Oct. 5. The second rescue involved a male visitor from France who had become stuck up on top of a large slick-rock area at Sody Springs located on the Hole-in-the-Rock road into the northern boundary of the Glen Canyon Recreation Area. After ascending ascend-ing three tiers of slick rock via a series of Moqui steps, the victim was unable to climb down due to poor visibility of the Moqui steps, the fact the steps were very far apart in some areas, very shallow in other areas and very sandy in some areas. The French visitor's hiking companion, compan-ion, from Belgium, called for help. Escalante S&R responders were: Sheriff Dave Jones, Curt Richins, Linda Mansell and Lance Jaggar. The rescue team departed Escalante at noon on Oct. 8 and, after a successful climbing rescue, were back in Escalante at 8:30 p.m. that same evening. v' |
