It has dark stripes from its nose to the base of its tail which curves high above its back as it runs. It nests beneath stumps, logs, and in crevices, coming out to eat grasses, seeds, nuts, fruits and insects. The layer of fat it stores tides it over through hibernation. Some food is also stored in its nest for eating when it awakens in spring. Feeding chipmunks and squirrels is tempting because they are so appealing, but they are wild and can be dangerous.- Their bite is not only painful but can also be very dangerous to humans as they carry bubonic plague, rabies and other diseases. All bites require first aid and possibly medical attention. Chipmunks in the more commonly visited areas of the county may become quite dependent upon food from visitors. Agressively seeking food, they may climb up people's pant legs and into bags or purses. They may bite a finger or a hand which holds no food because they expect to find food there. |
