Show Orchard Grass Available in Garfield Area Paiute orchard grass has recently been released by the Aberdeen Plant Material Center according to Tom Jarman, range conservationist with the Soil Conservation Service office in Pangultch. The orchard grass was developed for arid rangeland in the sagebrush-grass sagebrush-grass zone and can be seeded In areas of 11 inches annual precipitation. , Paiute greens up a week to 10 days earlier than crested wheatgrass and remains- greener and palatable longer. It grows to a height of IS to 18 inches in soils that are well drained, basic to slightly acidic, clay to . gravelly loams. Jarman says that Paiute responds well to increases in moisture from partial irrigation or wet moisture years. He said seeding should be done in late summer just prior to the summer thunder showers or in late fall. Seeds should be planted no more than one-half inch deep at three to four pounds per acre, planting one type of seed at a planting. If seeding is a mixture, adjustment ad-justment should be made according to the other species in the mixture. Paiute can be grazed to 60 percent of the annual growth in the winter and to 50 percent during the growing seasons. |
