Show Students Work on Physical Fitness for the certificate of attainment for all five events. All were members of Sharon Dale Marsh's and Hal Shurtz's classes. Sixth graders qualifying were Darren Coughlin, Brian Dutton, Mary Jane Crawford, Troy Hawkes, Candence Haws, Allen Overall, Joby Venuti, Kimberly Woolsey and JoAnn Woolsey. Qualifying fifth graders were Nephi Carter, Tracy Sidwell, and Tony Woolsey with fourth graders Travis Cottam, Brian Stowe and Megan Venuti also earning certificates. cer-tificates. Twenty-seven other students who participated in the fitness program received participation awards. ESCALANTE Physical fitness has been the goal of fourth, fifth and sixth graders at Escalante Elementary over the past few months. The students participated in the National Nabisco AAU Physical Fitness Program which is designed to develop fitness-related behavior early in life. The program is striving to provide fitness experiences and motivation necessary to establish a new generation of adults committed to phsycial active lifestyles. Young Americans participating in the nationwide program can discover their physical potential and the benefits of being physically fit. Students in the Escalante program have completed four required events including bent knee situps, push ups, standing long jump, and endurance run. They have also had an opportunity to select one optional event from five other physical skills. The fitness tests are designed to complement a variety of programs and have been used with the existing physical education programs to establish the fitness level of the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Fifteen students, or 37 percent of the competitors, were able to qualify |
