States Pep'tinber First marked the first year of the present European war. Let's think of the ghastly spectacle from an alible we perhaps haave never thought. I have call ed this a "Thumb Nail Inventory." 1. Ten independent democratic nations have been blotted out. 2. Three million tons of ships have been sunk. 3. Five million, three hundred thousand persons killed, wounded and unaccounted for. 4. -Militaary observers estimate a quarter of a million Russianh were left dead in Finland and about the same number of Finns either dead or wounded. 5. The Dutch Foreign Minister claims one-fourth of the Dutch army was killed in the first few days of the fighting. G. Add to the above ten million mil-lion men who poured out their blood on the battlefields of war from in 14 to 1918. How much human blood coursed in the veins of these first World v ar victims at the time of their slaughter? Answer Seventy-five thousand tons. |
