The elder Kirkham calls himself blessed because his son took over the business and turned it into a bigger success The son says it's not easy competing as an independent "It's damn hard work" he says "That's why a lot of independents have gone buy the wayside You have to put your heart and soul into it "There is a great temptation for bigger companies to swallow up people like us" the younger Kirkham says "And there is a great temptation to sell You have to have a tremendous personal commitment and enjoy what you're d dependent retailers are becoming increasingly rare Kirkham's is almost an anachronism "You don't see the old canvas variety of tent at all especially for camping purposes" says outdoor consumer writer Michael Hodgson of San Jose Calif "Family camping has become defined by the Eureka-stylcabin tent which is not made in the United States" Hodgson says "What Kirkham's is doing is virtually unheard of I don't know of any other company that makes canvas tents at that level" Kirkham's 10 factory workers make several thousand tents a year Recently the company built 120 tents for the Boy Scouts of same The tents go up easily seldom leak and rely on simplicity and quality materials "As a designer and manufacturer my father's always been an innovator" says Jack Kirkham Jr who continues to modify and design tents for a market that wants more lightweight products "He always looked at a product or a situation in terms of how you can make it better" the younger Kirkham says "For example if you were in a place that had a lot of bugs what could you build to make that situation better?
