ON SPORTS By Joe Baird THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE League is heading south Is Salt Lake City in its path? A well kept secret for most of its century-lonhistory the quaint little league with 12 players three downs and the "rouge" is trying to elbow its way onto the American professional sports scene The CFL established a US beachhead last year by expanding into Sacramento This season the league has added franchises in Baltimore Las Vegas and Shreveport La Next year it is contemplating adding two to four more American teams Orlando St Louis Memphis and Oakland have been men - 4k4 1 v i: Center Stage? No But Utah's Scott Deserves It t !i 41 Quick name the University of Utah football player who hasn't missed a single snap in the last two years Stumped? No problem Ute center Lance Scott knew you wouldn't know anyway The ones who count know Last year Western Athletic Conference coaches named the former Taylorsville High School player first-teaScott became only the fourth Ute in the history of the league to win first-teaplaudits Scott seems genuinely stunned that anyone would notice him "The only time offensive linemen get publicity is when we screw up and let the quarterback get sacked" And sacked is how Scott felt about his boyhood dream four years ago A Ute worshipper since he was old enough to play little league football on Murray and Taylorsville teams he felt his collegiate hopes had gone when the Utes changed coaching staffs in December of 1989 With a football scholarship just a signature away following a couple of years of rigorous recruiting by Don Eck and Wayne McQuivey of the Jim Fassel era Scott's dreams were shattered when the staff was dismissed and Ron McBride was hired "I remember seeing coach McBride standing by this tree when a TV guy was interviewing him about getting the Utah job I said 'So this is the guy who ruined my dream' I shut the TV off" Two weeks later McBride walked into the living room of Scott's Taylorsville home where that TV image had seemingly doused his collegiate plans McBride recalls the night as if it were yesterday "I walk into a house color scheme that has a I walk into Lance's room and I think I'm in the Crimson Club Hall of Fame He's got pictures of Utes all over his linewalls He had this shot of man Darryl Haley with a python draped over his shoulders" McBride's type of guy A "grunt" 4 I 4k Pennant Fever?
