Show SUNDAY The Salt Lake Tribune To appear at home at the horse races you gotta know the lingo U Continued from D-- General terms Apprentice — A young jockey who has not won a specific number of races Trainers who employ such riders get an "apprentice allowance" in the weight their horses must carry This allows the young jockey a better chance to get work and experience which heshe needs to improve Meanwhile the horse's trainer is trading the skill of a more experienced jockey for the weight advantage heshe gets when an apprentice jockey is used Bleeder — A horse that experiences hemorrhaging in the lungs during a race The condition is fairly common It is not and many horses who "bleed" are treated with the diuretic known as lasix In handicapping terms a horse running on for the first time should be studied closely The medication often helps a horse suddenly improve simply because it controls the pulmonary bleeding that probably hampered the horse's breathing in the past It makes sense: A horse will likely run better — perhaps better than ever before — if it can breathe better than it ever has Blinkers — equipment that limits a horse's field of vision during a race Many times blinkers are added if a horse shows a tendency to look around during a race Colt — An ungelded male 4 years and under Dam — The female parent of a foal Filly — A female horse 4 and younger Furlong — I8 of a mile six furlongs is 34 mile Gelding —A male horse any age that is neutered Inquiry — A review of a race for possible infractions usually called by the track stewards who perform the duties of an umpire If a review is requested by a participating jockey it is called an "objection" An inquiry or objection can result in a change in the order of finish as deemed by the stewards Mare — A female horse 5 or older Paddock — The area where horses are saddled and paraded before being taken to the racetrack A form of wagering in which all the Parimutuel money bet is returned to those with winning tickets after the racetrack removes its share The standard "take" by a racetrack is 20 Purse — The total money distributed to the owners of the top finishers in a race Scratch — When a horse is taken out of a race before it is run Trainers scratch horses because of adverse track conditions or a horse's ill health The ' 'k rkE I 1 1CA old that has won twice during its career Claiming race — Each horse entered is eligible to be purchased at a set price In a $5000 claiming race for example any horse can be purchased for $5000 Claims are filed before the race by licensed owners or trainers Claiming races help preserve the competitive balance of racing Here's why: The owner of a horse worth $10000 could enter it in a $2500 claiming race and probably win easily But just as probably the horse will be "claimed" for $2500 meaning the owner has lost his $10000 horse for much less than its actual value On the other end of the spectrum an owner probably wouldn't enter a $2500 horse in a $10000 claiming race because it has little chance of winning It would be outclassed Conditions — The requirements for participation in a particular race This may include age or sex or past performance like the Derby — A stakes race for Kentucky Derby or Wyoming Downs' upcoming Rocky Mountain Derby in which the Futurity — A race for owners make continuing payments to keep their horses eligible Purses for such races vary but they can become extremely lucrative The Futurity at Ruidoso NM for example has become a $2 million event Handicap — A race usually of some prestige in which a track's racing secretary assigns weights to be carried by horses Theoretically this is a way to make the race more competitive The best horse in the opinion of the racing secretary is assigned the most weight The least competitive horse gets to carry the least weight Maiden race — An event for horses that have never won a race --1:::m- D3 Sunday July 24 1994 la-si- ' LetgaZaalk42:1141 1 — "'" 0 ) ' k r ' t Ix ' 4' - Because the horse that was "breezing" did his job with much less effort than the horse that worked "handily" post-tim- e 1--- Tm A Bow 0 Sarah Brough Salt Lake City has been accepted to the North Carolina School of the Arts for 1994-9Brough will study violin - A14 ::s1A :':'?:':?4- :'44 r:3 5 x::::' ‘444:4-- ODD - gy:1 1 an- Brigham Young University nounced that 66 students from the college of nursing have been elected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and inducted as undergraduate graduate and community members of Iota Iota chapter at 13191 this spring kil A-- - ' ' 4 'Itt4 - ' V4'0 ' ' f : ' i' I : : - - ':- 1:::1 - k!-- over 16'd j sorbd ' ' r ::J:i eo " r' :4: 4zoiTA: coo71 2‘' 1 wood ' ' ' ' L :4' ' ' ' s 0 : - - i: --- -: ::- -: V-- J ' s' z ' : !'' - 1r t - - 1 : - :!1:: !:' :!-- :' 1 :1:: ?
