N Isolated from the international community since a divisive jungle war with the United States more than two decades ago Vietnam is emerging as a tourist destination For the first time cruise ships are stopping in Da Nang and Saigon places many Americans have associated with death and destruction The sublime beauty of the country is overwhelming as I saw firsthand on a recent visit to Southeast Asia aboard the mis Marco Polo Brilliant green rice paddies tended by peasant women in conical hats smiling faces in marketplaces offering exotic fruits for sale war memorials everywhere built on the spot to honor fallen soldiers strips of unspoiled beaches lush mountain vegetation sparkling from above This is Vietnam today A Third World country struggling for recognition — and capital investment The country is poor extremely so But it won't be long until Japanese European and American investors infuse Vietnam with money expertise and materials changing its face forever I am glad I glimpsed Vietnam now saw its simplicity its friendly people its ability to put the war behind I felt no animosity as an American Treading on soil that held the dead of thousands of soldiers I wasn't sure what to expect For me Vietnam was a faraway place where members of my generation were sent to fight the communist enemy Who was this enemy? And what was the beef with them? Many Americans came back from these jungles maimed and scarred for life Others came back — more than 58000 in body bags All I can say is I am happy I saw Vietnam in 1994 not 25 years before And from what people who were there during the war told me the country has not changed an iota Highlights for me included a trek to Hue Vietnam's imperial capital famed for its splendid tombs and beautiful women and the numerous taxi rides in the chaotic streets of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) E See t"::' 44ivrL:4'?' 4 i thaws out Vietnam r ' I:t '4 ?
