Concert pianist Gregory Saint Thomas left Salt Lake City for Europe over a decade ago and came home a true renaissance man. He I is now a royal jeweler, an accomplished painter and a talented sculptor. The Kimball Art Center is fortunate to present the first major showing of Saint Thomas' work since his return from Holland. The exhibit of paintings, jewelry, sculpture and drawings is a unique example of how one artist's imagination can manifest itself in different media. Saint Thomas has even included a tapestry which was translated from canvas to needlework with months of painstaking work. The human form is a H theme repeated throughout the exhibit. Saint Thomas uses deep red acrylic colors on black backgrounds to depict his masculine images. Green female figures counterpoint coun-terpoint and balance the red compositions. According to Saint Thomas, -the virile rnMNmiMHimnnMHmiimMM dominant force (red) makes the intuitive creative force (green) possible. Saint Thomas, who was born in Salt Lake City and graduated from the University Univer-sity of Utah, originally went to France to study music. After Af-ter a brief return to the United States he continued his studies in Spain and then moved to a small village in Southern Holland. From painting and drawing Saint Thomas moved easily into jewelry and he was quickly granted a master's stamp and an appointment ap-pointment from Queen Juliana. Some of the goblets on display at the Art Center were created during this time. Ancient mythic themes recur in both Saint Thomas' drawings and in his jewelry. "That is because we are still searching for the same answers," an-swers," he said. The Gregory Saint Thomas exhibit will continue in the Kimball Art Center's Little Gallery through Dec. 14. |
