Show Guide, May 1992 Kids love exploring Its only a short drive from Cleveland to the Cedar Mountain recreation area, a great place for a family picnic. This picnic area was built in the 60s by the Castle Valley Job Corps at southernmost edge of the prominent plateau. The picnic sites are immaculate and located in intriguing areas among the huge conglomerate boulders, just over the edge of the cliff and at look-ou- t points at the top. There is no water, but there are pit toilets. d With a nature trail along the cliffs well-marke- edge, Cedar Mountain overlook gives kids a great chance to explore before lunch. Along the way, theyll see lichen growing on the (ValuablelCouponl the rim of Cedar Mountain boulders that cap Cedar Mountain and beyond a chain-lin- k fence is a piece of petrified wood which became embedded in the conglomerate. Tree rings can still be distinguished in the white silicified fossilized log. Because Cedar Mountain runs along the north side of the San Rafael Swell, the best thing about the picnic area is the view. From the overlook, you can see a panorama of Castle Country, from the Wasatch Plateau to the west, to the craggy cliffs of the Buckhorn directly to the south and east of the overlook. In the far distance, the dim outlines of the LaSals and Hen- ry Mountains can be seen. Directly below the cliffs are the flatlands of the San Rafael. These areas have been grazed and managed by the BLM for years.
