Show Recreation-Touris- t Guide, May 1992-1- 5 Dinosaur Quarry (5) Cleveland-Lloy- d One of the most prolific dinosaur quarries in the world, the Cleveland-LloyDinosaur Quarry, has provided skeletons to museums throughout the world. A visitors center at the site makes it possible for tourists to see the workings d of the quarry and visit with a knowledgeable guide. The quarry is 35 miles south of Price and can be reached by following signs from SR-1and Highway 155. The last 12 miles of the route are on gravel roads, 0 Nine Mile Canyon Probably nowhere on earth is there such an abunart, both which may he hazardous when wet. The visitors center will be open Saturdays and Sundays until after Memorial Day, when it will be open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday. 0 dance of primitive petroglyphs Green River The town of Green River was settled where it was easiest to ford the river. And the river is still one of the strongest reasons to visit Green River. Green River State Park features an excellent campground situated on the banks of the Green River. It has 40 units, a modem rest room with hot showers and a sanitary dump station. Outfitters can arrange Skyline Drive float trips on the river, either paddle boat or white water rafting. The John Wesley Powell River History Museum displays artifacts of the Green River. Green River is best known for the excellent melons grown there and the annual Melon Days celebration. The city makes a perfect jumping off place for visiting Moab and Canyonlands. 0 north by leaving SR-at Scofield junction and traveling southwest on Highway 96 to Highway 261. Follow the drive west to Highway 31 and travel Highway 31 condition. It can be reached from for y, al The the 6 through Huntington Canyon to Huntington and Highway 10. Athough the drive extends south to Highway 29 above Joes Valley, the road is very rough, even four-wheel-dri- ve vehicles. Wedge Overlook The Wedge Overlook provides a striking view of the Little Grand Canyon, the San Rafael River and large rock monoliths to the east, south and west. There are several undeveloped campsites near the Overlook. This breathtaking scen- ery is located at the northern end of the San Rafael 0 Swell and is easy to reach from Price. From the town of Cleveland, drive south tow- ard the San Rafael Campground. Continue beyond the Buckhom Reservoir for 4.1 miles to the Buckhorn Well water tank. From the tank, go straight at the three-wa- y intersection and continue six miles to the Overlook. picto-graph- s, traced there. The canyon is just a few miles northeast of Price off and is about 50 miles long, despite its name. There are no facilities, so take water and be sure the car is filled with gas. Taking time for stops and SR-- 6 hiking, the entire tour, in and out, will take about six hours. For a detailed self- - guided tour, stop at the CEU Prehistoric Museum in Price for a brochure. Price Canyon Recreation Area the snow By has melted off the highest ridges of the Manti-LaSForest. Thats when the spectacular Skyline Drive opens for the year. This picturesque drive follows the backbone of the mountains, giving you a view on either side as far as Nevada and Colorado. The northern section of the road is in the best mid-Jul- and in one place. It only takes a short while to become proficient at spotting new outcroppings of art. It seems that every smooth surface has some type of human or animal figure Just North of Price off Ilwy. 6, the Price Canyon Recreation area is a perfect mountain retreat. Three day-us- e group picnsites can be reserved for a cool ic fee. Overnight campsites are available on a first come, first serve basis. Drinking water, toilets and garbage collection are provided. A popular feature of the Reservoirs and lakes Summers in Castle Country mean some of the hottest fishing and boating in the state. 0 at the head of Huntington Canyon, Electric Lake, Price Canyon Recreation Area is the Bristlecone Ridge Nature Trail. The trail can be hiked from the campground. Huntington North Lake and Huntington and Cleveland reservoirs provide excellent fishing not far from the town of Huntington. Electric Lake and Huntington North have docking facilities, camping and picnic areas. Low water at Scofield Reservoir may limit fishing at that popular fishery again this season. Further south, Joes Valley, west of Orangeville, and Millsite, west ofFerron, provide excellent fishing and boating opportunities. If the fish arent biting at any of those, Ferron Reservoir and Resort at the head of Ferron Canyon provides a beautiful Alpine Setting for fishing. |
