It seems some people take it much more seriously than others. For instance, I received a fax from the Utah High School Activities Association last week reminding me that May is designated by the association as First Security Bank Month because of their generous support" over the last four year. The press release goes on to say First Security Bank has donated over $800,000 for school athletics and activities in the state of Utah. The corporate sponsorship money makes up over 25 percent of the UHSAAs budget each year. That means the UHSAA has spent over $3 million for sports activities in four years. Thats big money! A second press release from earlier in the year says the UHSAA obtained over $325,000 in corporate spon- sorships for the school year from First Securi1991-9- 2 ty Bank and Pizza Hut. Benches Reservoir The water was recently stocked with catchable rainbow trout. Boulgers Reservoir Fishing should be good due to recent stocking. A much darker attitude toward sports was seen last week when the Carbon High Lady Dinos played the Logan High Lady Grizzlies for the right to play in the Class state tournament. The Lady Dinos have had a great season under the direction of Coach Don Gressmen. It is one of the best programs in the state, and the team has played undefeated so far. The Logan coach apparently knew her team when she was came to Price and used a four-fomistake on the Carbon field to her advantage. When the coaches met with the umpires before the game began, it was discovered the Dino baselines were four feet longer than regulations say the should be. The two coaches agreed to play anyway. But when the Lady Dinos dominated the Lady Grizzlies, the Logan coach thought the Cleveland Fishing has ranged between fair and excellent, depending on the day and skills of the angler. Best baits include worms, Powerbait and salmon 3-- A out-gunne- eggs. Huntington Creek Hatchery personnel recently planted 2,000 catchable rainbow trout between the forks of the Huntington and the power d ot 7-- mistake plant. Joes Valley Anglers are rainto catching bows and cutthroats at the rate of one or two fish per hour. Few splake are coming out. Shore fishermen are doing best on the west side along the points. As the celebrating was taking place in Price , the Logan coach was protesting the game to the UHSAA The protest was successful, and the Dinos were forced to replay the game Friday afternoon. silver A1 I can say to Logan is: WAAAAAA What a bunch of bawl babies." I do have this suggestion. Logan should change its mascot from a grizzly to a cubbie. With an attitude like that, the aggressive grizzly should be changed to something much smaller like a little cub. Lighten up. Sports is just a game. Kids should be learning good sportmanship, competitiveness and group interaction. Not how to use the system to your advantage. Reservoir spoons recommended. Colorado River are Water is high, and catfishing is , marginal. Dons Lake Fishing is slowing down and may soon be fished out. Anglers are using Mepps spinners and salmon eggs. Restocking will hopefully occur before the Memorial Day holiday. Hidden Lake Angler success is tapering off. Restocking is tentatively scheduled before the Memorial Day bottoms. Catfish will be in the holiday. Kens Lake Fishing is good. Salmon eggs are recommended. Best fishing is had along the dam or at the Mill Creek inlet. To avoid the sun-fisstay away form submerged trees. Pressure Foy Reservoir has been light. A dry fly (midge pattern) has been a h, good brookie producer. Lake Powell Fishing has slowed down somewhat for small and largemouth bass. Anglers are encouraged to work a lot of shorelines for bass. Certain points and coves seem to hold a lot of fish. Others are barren. Fishermen should keep moving until they find a hot spot. Light jigs, grubs and Power Worms work best on calm days. Crank-baitspinner baits and heavy jigs with plastic grubs are best s, for windy conditions. Striper harvest has been limited lakewide. Spawning is expected to occur any time with males congregating near long, submerge, rocky points and females traveling the sheer walls. Anglers may wish to try lures and jigs along mainchannel points. Recommended lures include the Zara Spook, Shad and Red Fin. Rap, A bucktail jig tipped with chartreuse grub is anther good choice. Anchovies are the preferred bait. A few walleye are being taken incidentally by bass fishermen, but no stringers are coming out yet. Very few crappie are being hooked. Crappie fishermen might try bright-colorejigs around submerged trees. Catfishing has been good. Mornings and evenings are better, especially in cloudy water. Anglers should drop minnows, anchovies or shrimp on gently sloping silt or snndy shad-imitatin- Rat-L-Tra- d p g one-t- o three-poun- d range. Pressure has been light. Monticello Lake No report on fishing success. Recapture Reservoir Biologists sampling this water found h and 12- - to size classes. 10-inc- 14-inc- h Softball season begins The community softball searon is off and running in Carbon County. Recreation Director Steve Christensen said its the biggest program in several years, with 21 mens teams and eight womens teams playing in five divisions. Mens leagues are being held Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and womens leagues on Tuesdays at the Price North Softball Complex. Christensen said he is pleased softball is back in Carbon County. At one point there were nearly 30 mens teams, but dwindled to just four teams four years ago. Since then, the program has grown every year to where it is nearly at capacity for the existing fields. Christensen said he is in the process of putting together a grant which he hopes will allow the county to install lights at the fairgrounds complex. That will permit more leagues to be started and will also help the Babe Ruth baseball program which currently plays at thnt facility. I 4 |
