Show Guide, May 1992 Explore the history of Castle Country in its museums Pioneer Heritage Museum If you like antiques, you will love the Pioneer Heritage Museum at 100 North 100 East in Castle Dale. Its loaded with beautifully preserved antiques from about the turn of the century. The schoolroom boasts rows of desks, old primers, a blackboard and even an old bell. In the kitchen, you can see an old butter chum, a woodstove, buffet, ornately carved dining room chairs, an icebox and a variety of utensils, including a milk separator. There is bedroom furniture with old nightgowns hanging in the wardrobe. Exquisite bedding is found on the bed, and all is in perfect order. The living room boasts a leather chase lounge and numerous old rocking chairs. In the general store, everything from a spinning wheel to a tobacco cutter is found in perfect condition on the shelves. Rocks and minerals, fos- - RESCENT UNCTION SERVICE AND CAFE sils and allosaurus skeleton and ancient artifacts are exhibited along with mining relics. The displays date from 375 million years ago to the early 20th century. During the summer, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Western Mining Railroad Museum Castle Country boasts an unusually diversified cultural heritage, and each display at Helpers Western Mining and Railroad Museum records a special chapter in the story of Carbon Countys people. The museums name suggests that its contents are mostly mining and railroad artifacts, but personal artifact collections also depict Carbon Countys lifestyles at home, at work, in school and in the community. The mining museum is a storehouse of old photographs and memorabilia of bygone days. Visitors delight in recognizing a familiar face in the old pictures or finding a relatives name on an old payroll list. In fact, the town received its name from being the spot where a helper engine was attached to trains to push railroad cars up the steep Price Canyon grade. The centerpiece of the exhibit is an railroad caboose. Built in 1918 for Utah Railway Company, caboose 55 traveled the tracks between Provo and Mohrland from 1918 to 1975. Located at 294 South Main in Helper, the museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Group tours are available upon request and may be arranged by contacting the staff in advance to schedule a date.
