Show W 1 I 1 I 1 I 1 forthe deseret newe wheat smut ac mr E editor sir I 1 have noticed in 3 or 4 of your ayour last numbers of the deseret Desere fc news that some soine of the brethren have attempted to describe the cause of smut in wheat and the remedy in part I 1 beg leave to disagree I 1 have hav e been a member of ali the e agricultural society in genesee county new YZ york ork for a number of years which was large and wealthy and nd tried numerous experiments to prevent smut in wheat and the result was to wash your you seed wheat in good strong ng brine and take out all the light wheat and foul stuff and then thed take the wheat t out and mix lime or ashes which is equally good and sow the wheat the next day and one and a half ap OP two bushels to the acre I 1 TU this 3 quantity to the acre proved to reduce the number of suckers and wheat would grow up more even and ripen more ever when grain is sown thin it will stool out more moie and the root is not sufficient to brin bring all the heads to maturity the balance will be smut I 1 I 1 I 1 have the satisfaction of saying that I 1 was the first to try the experiment of sowing ai 9 bushels on 6 acres and I 1 was blackguarded black guarded by old farmers for so doing but when the harvest camo came I 1 had a splendid crop the heads were wei efrom f rom 5 to 7 inches ion long g well filled I 1 stated the course that I 1 had pursued to the next annual fair and urged the necessity of the farmers sowing sowing more than one bushel to the acre as ws the common custom and some tried it and found the benefit and in a short ti time me they got to sowing two bushels on good rich land that was well or upon old pasture land that was well ploughed sloughed hed and subdued the experiment wo worked aked well throughout the county where the soil was suitable but the soil in this valley is far superior to the most of that county the soil here will bear two bushels sowing ori most of the farming lands and the farmer that has te ten U a acres 0 re 8 let h him im sow ten b shelbi on five acres and he will get as much wheat as he would if he sowed bowed the ten with one bushel to the acre then he can sow peas on the other five acres and c change biange Z the next year and put wheat where you had peas in this way you will keep your land good wheat does well af after ter potatoes but you should not sow oats on wheat land if this course should be adopted it would soon mix all the wheat with oats there is no crop that will take the strength out of the soil as oats all oats should be raised on low ground that is too damp or wet for wheat they will do the best on such land seed wheat should not be thrashed with a machine there was an object objection tion to it in genesee county and should hould be much more so here because the wheat is is much dr er here it breaks off a great many of the chits caits or seed ends of the wheat I 1 consider it a good object to sow 11 1 or two bushels to the acre here in tho the valley on account of the e extreme heat of the sun a hot sun will draw as much substance from plowed land as a good crop will the quicker plowed and is covered with our grain in the die spring spi ing 0 the tha better it w will ill kee keep the sun from the earth arain graan should not be watered until th the first joint is set grain has a carrot booti root and should not be watered until the root has had time to get well in the ground if you do dd water ii ter before the fir first S t joint is set the roots will ill spread out or on the ground and dry u so M much U ah qt quicker bieker that you cannot restore it but let it stand until the root is full length in the earth 1 it will not require half so muc much h water to bring it to maturity P when yo your ur wheat is thrashed take the latr straw aw i and stack it when the stack is two feet high 10 f feet beet across put 3 bushels of stone lime in the centre and put pat a pole on top of the lime nigh up your stack the stack should contain the talo straw for one acre take out the pole and put in water until the lime is slacked it will steam through the whole stack an and decompose the whole stack in a short time then take the cam compound and strew it on your wheat land and plough it in in Durau pursuing ing this course you will keep your I 1 wheat land in good condition and to supply the place of your straw sow a few a acres of corn two bushels to the acre broad cast sow it about the of may or first of june it will make vetter tretter forage lor cattle or horses it is first rate for cows that give milk you yon will make enough a more b utter butter inthe in the winter to pay all ex pence ence then you will be enabled to f furnish more eatter butter for tithing this crop will greatly im prove your land for wheat I 1 you ou should plough your land deep and fine for wheat and make it smooth that houi your wheat will come up even and havo an equal start yours truly ILI GIBBS CITY feb 1853 we omita omit a portion of the above for wads of space apace but have given all on grain I 1 |
