Show IS IT THE LOST JOSEPHINE Facts About Dr Watkinss Latest m Discoveries in Southern Utah Editor Tribune While It Is true that the mere mention that the longlost Josephine mine has been found sends n chill up the backbone of many who have from time to time been faked on lost Josephine mine schemes it Is i none the less 0 fact that In the long ago the Spaniards and Mexicans did I carry on an extensive mining business mining 3 In southern Utah In ore that was sufficiently rich to pay them for con veying to Mexico by the aid of pack burro tralnu I Ja I almost as certain that those mines have not been located since the days of modern mining These two facts mininG warrant ua in assum ing that they may yet bo discovered and lend credence to any story that at all seems credible Many people still living in southern Utah remember stl story so often told them by old Chic I I Kanoah how bin best warriors killed by the Spaniards Wo11lols and Mexicans were while defending their mines which shows that they must have been lo cated In that part of the State where whe1O Dr Watklna has recently made such wonderful discoveries In the way o f old shafts and dumps located on a rich vein of ore that runs from JC to 38 per ton in gold The facts that led up to this extraor dinary discovery briefly told brlet are that I Dr C E Watlns of Boston Muss i M Yullns Boson rf < while in southern Utah by his connec I lon with tho Boston Placer Mining company of which he Is I the president and general manager about two yeans ago met Mr P M Keen of R Flllmoret Utah who Interested the FlmorC the story of tho lost mines atatlng that he was In possession of Informa possesion tion that would lead to their dlscoverv The doctor put up the necessary cash to equip Mr Keen with neccssnrco a prospectors outfit and Incidentals 0 in less than to months Dr Wulklns who was then at home in Boston i received a II telegram from Keen staling that he stuUnr v had the Spanish mines corralled Dr Watkins Immediately started for Utah and at once put ten men to work to cxplorlnJ the wonderful find for wonderful won-derful It Is I located near what Is known as Hell hole This for years has been believed to bea natural cavern but more recent developments have shown that It I Is the work of man In one of the shafts discovered by Mr Keen there are ten men at work removing dirt and other debris that has fallen In from the top In thin shaft there I arc several regular landings with n manhole through rich ono enters the ore chambers below These manholes 1 wore covered over with flat rocks the I walls having been cut away to make room for placing tho rocks over the hole Small particles of ore very rich in gold and silver have been found adhering to the walls of these chambers cham-bers The doctor will continue bin I labors until he has cleared out aU of these old shafts and whatever is there he will find The fact that there arc four shaHs all on the same belt of ore a belt of oro so rich that float can be picked up anywhere any-where on tho surface that assays from sa to 3b together with many other things make the conclusion that here I were the great Spanish mines of yore a very natural and reasonable one l But whether this was the Lost Josephine I Jo-sephine or the Lost Sally Ann cuts no Ice in tho case The fact Is that Dr Watkins has mac n very rich find so rich that It will soon be the talk in all mining circles The doctor Is rather noncommittal but the zeal with which he works and the free manner in which he Is spendIng spend-ing his money warrant one In concludIng conclud-ing that Whatever else others may think of the find he believes in I heart and soul The New Fay Station I HL J Warren of the Engineering and Mining Journal returned yesterday yester-day from a
