Show I AIDING DESTITUTE l MINERS CABINET CONSIDERS RELIEF FOR NEEDY AT NOME Conclusion Reached is to Havo War Department Send Transport Thero 1I 1 I to Bring Homo Penniless Men i Washington Aug 31Time regular Friday Cabinet meeting was held tp Cpblnet < eLnS day The Chinese tiu ton wits of course the allimportant question UUL J as the United States has now announced an-nounced her ppllcy to the powers no further step is possible until the re piles are received The question therefore 1 there-fore did not actually receive much consideration con-sideration at the meeting today The only two other subjects besides that of China that were considered the condition of several hundred or thousand destitute mltors at Cape Nomeand lof ajarge number of Indian In-dian tribes in Alaska It was decided that the War department should send a transport to Cape Nome to bring back such of the miners as are penniless penni-less and liable to endanger the public I welfare there this vinter by reason oC their destitute condition It is believed that a large proportion of those who flocked to Nome early In the spring hoping to strike It rich are strandjd Provisions and clothing will be sent to the Indians who are saId to be destitute des-titute The transportation companies It Is claimed refuse to aid the unfortunates at Cape Nome Winter will come by the end of September and time transport trans-port In order to effect relief muse be sent at once Gen Randall estimates that there are 1000 persons In Nome in danger of starvation Information received from several official and unofficial sources show that the Alaskan Indians along the coast from Cape Nome are In a serious condition con-dition The miners It Is rumored have gathered for their own use nearly all of the driftwood which the Indians have been accustomed to depend upon for their winter fuel and In some instances in-stances the cabins of the Indians have been torn down by the miners and the wood used by them legardless of the suffering Indian In addition to these afflictions It Is i said that la grippe in a most virulent form has broken out among the Indian and that altogether tholr case Is one which calls for Immediate Im-mediate succor The Government has taken hold of the matter and no doubt provisions clothing and medical attention at-tention through the marine hospital service will be forthcoming The other matter discussed at the meeting was that of better roads in the Philippines The Internal commerce com-merce of the Islands It was said Imperatively Im-peratively demands better moans of communication through Luzon particularly partic-ularly The Government has received a request for permission to extend the one railroad In Luzon to a point about fifty miles to time north This request will be granted if possible as It woull greatly aid in getting the products of points north to Manila |
