Show MAJ GORLINSKI DEAD PROMINENT SURVEYOR AND CITIZEN PASSES AWAY Sketch of His Varied Life in This and Other CountriesCame Here in 1869 and Well Liked by All MaJ Joseph Gorllnski died early yesterday yes-terday morning at Holy Cross hospital of general debility He had gone to the hospital but two weeks before as prior to that time he had been his usual self a trip to California a year ago being of great benefit to him But lie was nearly 75 years of age and the end came as n result of a general breaking down after half a century of active work in this and other countries In the death of MaJ Gorlinlc Salt Lake loses a good and useful citizen kmt frl V 49 jj itI M 1WLI IIJ i f4 ijii tUHIf1 1 I Uaj Joseph Gorliuski In his private life he was affectionate and charitable and In business ho was a most thorough civil and mining engineer en-gineer He was born September 0 1825 In the little village of Plotsk near Warsaw In Russian Poland lie began the study of engineering In his native village vil-lage and upon the breaking out of the Polish revolution he joined the patriots and when crushed by Kussla ho became be-came a political exile to France In 1810 he came to New Orleans where he soon was made Its clty en glneer and subsequently performed much work for the State and the United States lie v vas living at Baton Rouge when the Civil war broke out and he at once joined the Federal army In which ho served ns a soldier and a man Ills first commission won on the staff of Gen Williams and later nerved on the staff of Gen Banks He was prominent In the engineering work Incident to the building of the fortifications fortifica-tions around VIcksburg During the reconstruction period he lived In Louisiana Loui-siana until ordered lo Washington lo servo the land ofllce Interior department depart-ment where he was head of the draughting division HP came to Utah In 1SG9 being one of the earliest passengers over tilt irow Union Paclllc road here he made many Government surveys and for years followed tho profession of mining mi-ning and civil engineer Much of his work was In original surveys and In I hljj private work ho made several maps Including Park City and Blngham which were considered authority He was also a land and mining attorney His wife died twenty years ago lie had nine children five of whom are living Mrs M A Hughes and Robert Gorllnski here Will Gorllnski in Mcl co Frank in Nevada and a sister in Stockton Cal The time for the funeral fu-neral has not been set but all United Slates deputy surveyors will meet at the United States SurveyorGenerals office In the Templeton building this afternoon at 1 oclock to make arrangements arrange-ments for attending the funeral |
