Show Fire At Residence Leaves But Shell Milford had been free of fires cf much consequence over a period of some seven years until a few-weeks few-weeks ago when the Firemen's hall was so badly damaged as to be j useless, but the law of averages ' seems to be hot on the trail of the local firemen and their well-nigh perfect record. i Thursday afternoon, with the sounding of another alarm, the fire was found to be at the Walrus ; street home of A. B. Gilliam, one i of the operators at the A. T. & T. relay station Mrs. Gilliam is re-1 ported to have been in one room of the house sewing when smoke swept in upon her from the vicini-; ty of the kitchen, making it impossible impos-sible for her to reach her own telephone to report the fire. The response on the part of the firemen fire-men left nothing to jbe desired but, j despite their speed, there remains 1 only the charred shell of the house, j while the contents were a total i loss except for a rug and a few j small pieces of furniture. It is j understood there was some insur-! ance on the home, according to J. S. Rickerson, local fire inspector, who states that defective wiring was the apparent cause of the fire. Dry as everything is at this time of year, Mr. Rickerson cautions extreme ex-treme care in the burning of weeds and rubbish of all kinds as it is a simple matter for such fires to get out of control or carry sparks to nearby property.
