Show Convention he took center stage before the voting delegates and to show his ability as an amateur magician he produced a fake dollar bill, touched a match to it and let it completely burn to ash. Then with a wave of the hand he had annother bill in his hand. This turned out to be a rubber dollar bill. He turned to the delegates and said, as he stretched it to twice its original length. "This is what I will do with the taxpayers dollars, if I am elected commissioner! Now let's see how he has stretched the taxpayers dollars. When he took the oath of office on January 1, 1981 the commissioner's commis-sioner's salary was $27,694.00. In 1982 he voted himself a raise to $29,496. In 1983 he voted himself a raise to $30,5 14. In 1984 he voted himself a raise to $34,500. In 1985 he voted himself a raise to $37,800. In 1986 he voted himself a raise to $40,800. EACH YEAR we have had a property tax mill levy increase, or the Commission has found a way to put part of the cost of county government on to the cities and other entities within the county. Now I ask you tax payers, is this the way you stretch the tax dollar? Elmer W. Barlow Former Bountiful City Mayor Criticizes commissioner I was pleased and delighted to read the two articles written about Mayor Simmons of North Salt Lake and Mayor Thompson Thomp-son of West Bountiful and their pledge to the citizens who elected them, that they were going to cut down the cost of government in their cities and would even be willing to take a salary cut to accomplish this goal. I REALLY believe they will be able to do this, because they are both strong men with a will to accomplish what they set out to do. At a time when the employees and officials of many industries are taking cuts, this is certainly the time for government govern-ment officials to take cuts in salaries also. In the past few days I have learned that Mayor Jake Simmons of North Salt Lake has taken a substantial cut in the mayor's salary and Mayor Jerry Thompson of West Bountiful has reduced re-duced his own salary by 40 percent. Both of these mayors should be highly commended for keeping their promise to the citizens who elected them. THIS IS the exact opposite of what our present County Commissioner Com-missioner Harry Gerlach has done. Six years ago in the County |
