ATHLETES from Clearfield, Layton and Davis did just that. Craig Carter of Clearfield put on the biggest show, as the Falcon muscleman shattered a 15-year-old record in the discus. Carter, who is primarily known for his heroics in the shot put, unleashed a throw that went 186-7': feet. That broke a throw of Orrin Olsen that went 1 80-10 80-10 back in 1971. "I GUESS I really don't know my limits in the discus," said Carter, Car-ter, "I've concentrated so much on the shot put that I've let my discus potential go untapped. " But I won't be happy until I get the record in both events." THE RECORD didn't come down in the shot put, even though Carter gave it everything he had. In his six tries, the Clearfield senior finally managed a terrific throw of 61-7'2 which was less than a foot off the state mark set by Chad Law a year ago at the Davis High Invitational. Invita-tional. The throw by Carter was a personal best for himself and it capped cap-ped quite a day in showing off his skills. Other Clearfield athletes who had commendable days were Vaun Waite in the shot where he took second behind Carter with a throw of 53 6'2. Lance Roberts completed com-pleted as splendid run in the open 800 meters by taking third place (1:58.97), a personal best for both of those athletes. DAVIS' Kurt Black did not run in any other event besides the 3200 meters in an attempt to bust the state record in that event. But it wasn't meant to be for the Davis High long distance star, at least in terms of records to be broken. He did however take first place by more than 20 seconds. Clay Singley put forth a pure and gutsy effort in the decathalon by taking second to Mountain View's Tom Andrus. Andrus topped the field with 5,976 points while Sing-ley Sing-ley posted 5,810, just 160 points away. Todd Malcom of Davis finished fifth in the decathalon with 4,998 points, another fine effort. DAVIS' Dave Snowball captured cap-tured a second place in the javelin event with a long toss of 175 feet. Layton also had some athletes who had fine afternoons. TAKE FOR instance John Wag-staff Wag-staff in the 300 IM hurdles. He finished second there to Scott Urban of Hillcrest and was also third in the 1 10 high hurdles. It was, a brilliant afternoon for the former middle-distance ace. Layton's Robert Porter was overshadowed by Clearfield's Carter Car-ter in the shot put, but he had a toss of 163-4 which was his furtherest throw ever. |
