Show GSG1LMJ7G UGl'JS By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Memorial Day has come and gone. And what an exciting time. I think the biggest thrill was going to the open house for our new auditorium and classrooms class-rooms and having such a wonderful won-derful place to have our school and community functions. Last Friday night a large crowd enjoyed cowboy poetry there. Local cowboys performed as did Steve Downs and his wife from Cedar City. An old Ken Curtis movie was also shown. It was filmed in Escalante and there were many local actors in it. The Mecham sisters, Marlene, Deon and Geraldine then 16, 13, and 10, also sang with Ken in the evenings when they were through filming. It was a full day centered around the old high school gym, with the Escalante Festival going on. On Saturday evening an even larger crowd congregated to watch the production of "Sagebrush Mary." It was very well done with all local actors. Sagebrush Mary was Mary Alice Shurtz who was the midwife mid-wife in Escalante for many years. She still has many relatives rela-tives living here. Her granddaughter, grand-daughter, Sherree Roundy, and husband Jerry, and Quinn Griffin were instrumental in getting get-ting the play produced. Sheree's sister, Sheila and their brother Nyle Schow were here for the play, along with many other relatives rel-atives who live in Escalante and out of town. Some of those being McKay Bailey, Alice Ann Lyman, Lillian Lyman, Betty Schow, Vivian Collard, Susan Shurtz, Zack Wilson, Lenza Wilson, Carlyle Shurtz, to name a few. ' Square dancing was enjoyed by a large group after the play, led by Crockett Dumas. I thought Crockett said his knees were about worn out when he left here a few years back, but he must have found a new body parts shop. Didn't look like there was anything wrong with his knees that night! The descendants of Jared Riley and Alice Lovina Porter also held their annual Memorial Day family reunion here on Saturday. A considerably smaller small-er group this year with only 177 in attendance. The family of Hyrum Porter were the hosts this year. Ed Jarrett (husband of Phyllis Porter) was the master of ceremonies. Doris and Howard Gagon, St. George; the family of the late Vernon Porter, Michael, Ronnie and LeAnne; Darlene and Glade Reynolds, Renee Owens, Marvin and Gloria Porter from the family of Orland Porter; and it was spearheaded by Owen and Leola Porter. So, I'll mix everybody together and try to remember who I saw in town on that weekend! week-end! Hal Shurtz had all his kids here for a family reunion. Vicki, Valerie, Kay Lynn, Brenda, Jaleen, Kenneth, Kerry and their families. Everyone but Julie and she lives in Milwaukee, Wis. They had a total of 53 in attendance. Ken and Roma Clark and Ruby Griffin were here from St. George. When I asked Ruby when she was coming home to stay she replied, "I'm already half here." I told her I was only half here too and I have been here all winter! At the home of Klyn and Marlene Haws were: Budd and Aloha Porter, Provo; Jon and Jillyn Sorensen and family, Salina; Rick Haws and friend Marian Casse, Ontario, Calif. The Leland Porter family had the largest number in attendance at the Porter Reunion, with the families of Edith and Dick Sharp, Bountiful; Bernice Losee, Spanish Fork, Budd and Aloha Porter, Provo; Ben and Renee Porter; DeLane and Leah Griffin. Their aunt Verna Roe Victor came and joined in with them, again stating that this would probably be her last time. She loves Escalante. She had just returned home when she received word that her sister, Bonna Mason, Idaho Falls, Ida. had passed away. Carolyn and Vergean Porter had their kids here: Clint and Shanna Porter and family, Cedar City; Vergeania Davenport and family, Summit; Kevin and Shelly Porter and family, Parowan. Velma Boulter had her grand-kids grand-kids here, Rob and Miriam Lund from Salt Lake City and Jerry and Jennifer Lund, of Lehi. The Mounteer girls were here from Salt Lake City: Marva, Peggy, Myrna and Carol. They never miss coming to decorate the graves of their parents, the late Marvin and Louise Mounteer. We see their brother, Jerry, quite often. He comes in with the Coke company to service serv-ice the Coke machines in town. Ron And Linda Mecham, Las Vegas, Nev., and part of their family were here over the weekend. week-end. Married daughter Machelle and husband Delbert Leavitt and family came with them. MaeVonn Taylor had most of her family here. From the Salt Lake area came Jerry and Monica Taylor, Jimmy and Ethel Taylor; and Emmorn and Rita Dodds from Idaho. And, of , course, Louie and Janalee Bernardo who live here. Vernon and Peg Roundy, Monroe, came with their family. fami-ly. Renon Reed and part of her family from the Richfield area joined them. Jim and Jolyn Spencer, Orem, spent most of the week here. Warren and Kathleen Woolsey and family, Cedar City, visited Thelma Marsh. Ivan and Lucille Davenport, Salt Lake, visited at the home of Dan and Lois Spencer. Lewis and Jean Griffin came from Provo to spend time at their home here. Don't know how many of their family members mem-bers were here. Loreta Shurtz, Richfield, was here with most of her family members joining her. Gordon Shurtz came from Las Vegas, Nevada, Don Shurtz (I guess he still lives around Castledale?), and Dorothy and Newell Cowles, Virginia Seegmiller and families from Richfield. Didn't see Ivan and Clea, but they could have been here. Visiting at the home of Eric and Sherry Woolsey were Craig and Frankie Lou Evans of Sandy. |
