Salt Lake, Jan. 14 There was a secret caucus of the senate on Wednesday, Wednes-day, held in the committee room after senate had adjourned. In which two senators had a row. The object of the caucus was to consult on the question of employes of the senate. When the caucus was held on Saturday Satur-day night last the selection of an enrolling en-rolling and engrossing- clerk and a minute min-ute clerk was not made, but It was decided de-cided that Senator Marks should name the first and Senator Badger the minute min-ute clerk. .Accordingly, when the election of the senate officials came before that body on Tuesday, William. E. Jenkln6, a brothor-ln-law of J. U. Eldredge. Jr., ex-deputy clerk of Salt Lake county, was named by Mr. Badger as minute clerk, and J. E. Hill of Salt Lake county as engrossing clerk by Mr. Marks, their names being Included In S. R. No. 1, and they were elected. After the election it was discovered that Elder Willard Done, former prl- vatc secretary to Governor cutler, naa been left out In the Bhuffle, and having held office once, like the others in the royal families, he must have a place. Hence the caucus. When the caucus w'as in order Senator Sen-ator Badger of Salt Lake proposed the creation of an assistant engrossing and enrolling clerk, a useless position, and put' Jenkins in this position and make Done minute clerk. This w'as opposed by Senator Kuchler Kuch-ler on the ground of economy. He declared de-clared that an assistant engrossing clerk was a useless luxury, that it was created solely to take care of some one who believed offices were entailed," and it is said he Indulged In plain language. Badger replied In an equally forceful way and the two senators almost came to blows. All this was learned after tho caucus and was due to a heated argument In the senate chamber after the caucus. It was this argument that caused inquiry in-quiry and the above facts ' were irlonrKul When Senator Kuchler was asked Wednesday evening about the row ho declined to talk, declaring he had nothing noth-ing to say. Senator Badger could not be seen. |
